When to Start Networking??

The answer here is probably the earlier the better, but I'm nearing the end of my freshman year and haven't really begun, other than connecting with alumni on LinkedIn. My plan is to begin reaching out via LinkedIn and/or firm email to people this summer/fall, try to set up calls, do some in person coffee chats over winter break if possible, then of course follow up after that. This timeline seems like it would make sense, especially with recruiting beginning spring of sophomore for many firms, but I wanted to hear others' thoughts on the topic.

Also, how much should I prepare/know about the industry before going on calls, coffee chats, or informational interviews? I would guess a basic knowledge of what IBD actually does, general information on the firm, maybe a deal or two they worked on etc. are needed to express interest. What else should I know?

Any input is appreciated.

Start now. Prepare for the calls/meetings by doing a bit of research on the person's company, line of business and their background. If you ask the right questions, hopefully you learn a lot about the career, how they got into it and how you can as well.

.......Now, the earlier the better, I dont understand why you want to wait till Summer/Fall.

Throughout each conversation you are going to get better at pitching yourself, you are going to learn more about the industry, you are going to learn more about certain banks, and most importantly you are going to get your name out there. I honestly dont see why you wouldn't want to learn as early as possible, leaving it till later just seems lazy to me.

All my first calls were pretty trash/I said the wrong shit/robotic, it was through practice that I can now get on the phone with an MD and successfully pitch myself. So I advise you to start now so by the time fall comes, you are a stud at getting on the phone/meeting people and successfully getting remembered/referred.
