Which minor is most beneficial and how much of a difference does it actually make?

I’m a rising sophomore and I just realised that because of the course load I took in freshman year and summer school that I only need 71 more credits to graduate over the next 3 years.

However the problem is that for my visa to be valid, I have to take at least 12 credits each semester, which means that either I:

  • take 12 credits for 5 semesters and then pick up some easy elective for the last semester
  • pick up a minor in some subject so I still have to take roughly 15 credits each semester
  • try graduate a semester or two early

Curious to hear opinions on what you’d recommend. If the second option is the best, how much of a difference does it make? And which major would be the best to go with. If it makes any difference, I attend a semi target and am expecting to graduate with a GPA of 3.85+, and am keen for work in consulting primarily but also maybe IB etc.

While a minor won’t ever make a huge difference in recruiting, I think it could be wise to get a minor in something that uses a different kind of reasoning from your major. If you study history for example, a minor in math would go a long way to demonstrate your ability to think quantitatively. And if you study something technical, a minor in a liberal arts subject could demonstrate your ability to think big picture.

Id say this is marginally more important in consulting than in banking. Consulting is much more interdisciplinary and requires different modes of thought, whereas banking is more technical in nature. For banking, you’d likely get more value out of a technical minor (even if you already have a technical major), rather than something that makes you more ‘well rounded’

This should definitely be weighed against the benefits of just taking easy classes, which should enable you to have higher grades and spend more time on recruiting and org involvement. In many cases, getting a minor might not be worth forgoing these benefits, as a minor will never help that much, but better grades, networking, and org involvement can
