Which program? Oxford MFE or MIT MFin
Hi guys,
I am a senior in college and interested in IB or PE after graduation. I have applied to some top master of finance programs in the UK and US, including Oxford MFE, Princeton MSF, MIT Mfin, Columbia MFE. I already got admitted to Oxford's Master of Finance Economics program. How would you guys rank those programs in terms of getting a job at IB or PE? Thanks a lot.
- By the way, I am an international student studying in a non-target US school.

That really depends on where you want to work after you graduate? If you want to work in the US, best choice would be to go with a US school (preferably MIT). If you want to work in the UK, Oxford is as good as it gets.
I would agree with Matrick here.
Isn't Oxford FE IB oriented whereas MIT MFin trading/hedge fund?
These programs aren't good for IB and PE. They mostly place into trading, quant research, risk management.
If you want IB/PE, go to a top U.S. b-school.
I seriously don't get how people can claim that there is such a clear cut difference between where what program places people. I have never seen anyone look at the program and say "Oh, wait no he did MFin at Princeton. We shouldn't invite him for an IBD interview". Just for what it's worth: Just from the class of 2011, 3 people from Oxford MFE now work at Blackstone (CPE/REPE). I am pretty sure that you can find the same statistics about the other schools as well.
@wuyuzhao - it all depends on where you want to work after graduation, they are all great programs. Did you receive scholarships or financial aid for any?
Great stuff Matrick.
Thanks lasampdoria
Thank you all for the answers. I actually plan to work at Hong Kong for a few years and get back to mainland China. @Matrick I haven't heard the results of the scholarships yet. They are released in March... And as an international student, I am not eligible for the financial aid. But your statistics are quite helpful. What would you recommend if I what to end up working at Hong Kong or mainland China? Thanks a lot
Let's talk again when you get offers. PM me when the time has come.
If you want to work in Hong Kong then Oxford hands down. It is probably the most prestigious university in the world and prestige counts for a lot in Asia.
Oxford is not the most prestigious university in the world.
Well, he did say "probably."
Oxford is certainly top 3 if you're only looking at wow factor.
I believe that in China, particularly in Hong Kong, MIT beats Oxford, as it is assumed to be more quantitative.
Just curious. Did the OP get the scholarship offer from Oxford?
If you want IB or PE, do an MBA, not a mfin/mfe.
Oxford is awesome, so is MIT!
hey guys.,
Thanks for all the posts. So I indeed got offers from both Oxford's MFE program and MIT's MFin. I come from mainland China and I am looking to develop a career in investment banking or private equity in Hong Kong. Which one is better? My concern about MIT is that it is a little expensive to be honest. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot. Oh, by the way I didnt get any scholarship or financial aid from these two programs : (
