Who's more innovative, Apple or Microsoft

Who do you guys think is a more innovative company? Im leaning towards MSFT. They were early into the 'new generation' of gaming and helped expand the console market, then they drop the kinect which is pretty amazing. Plus they are ahead of Apple when it comes to Cloud Computing.

Apple is way better at designing things and they have the iPad, iPhone, and iTV which are 3 products that I think were pretty innovative.

Thoughts?

pretty much agree with your analysis.

apple has a few cash cow consumer products that were/are great. microsoft's enterprise solutions/software is incredible, along with everyday PC software. overall innovation i have to give to microsoft in the end, the number of markets in which they compete is much greater.

Agree with all the above and add the following: MSFT is the reason that everyone HAS a computer now. The open architecture of the original DOS platform lent itself to individuals tinkering around and expanding on their own. Apple never has and never will give up the idea of controlling every parameter of their OS - they have effectively and truthfully marketed it as "more convenient" but at the same time wish they could ensure that the only ones that have any sophisticated knowledge of computers are Apple's own in-house programmers.

For what it's worth, Apple made a nice phone. But everyone is basically copying it now. I'm not so sure that they have another big idea after this one......

Get busy living

Are we talking in the history of the company or now? If we're talking the life of the company than you would have to go MSFT but currently, I would agree with the TheKing

If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses - Henry Ford

Both have become patent trolls. Microsoft makes more money off Android payments from HTC ($15 per phone) than they do off Windows Phone 7. Apple has become petty enough to sue Samsung, HTC etc. over every little patent they hold, no matter how generic (grid of icons, pinch to zoom etc.) because those companies are growing far faster and have far better products than Apple can produce about to launch in the US etc.

Apple - they make products based on what people desire, use daily, and request. Apple improves the quality of our technological lives.

Microsoft makes products they think people will like, or at least pay for

I don't think Microsoft necessarily creates "new" products. They entered existing markets for every product they sold. The PC was already done by Apple. Gaming consoles were already done by Sony and Nintendo. Smartphones were already done. MP3 players already done and etc.

They are very good at what they do though. Note: I am not an Apple fanatic. I own nothing by them.
