Why doesn't Samsung have an NYSE-listed ADR? If they did, would you own it?
I've been thinking about this ever since I started following the stock market back in the day, and noticed that Samsung is a behemoth of a company, a large portion of South Korea's economy, and produces the top selling smartphones, tvs, computers, tablets, washers, dryers, refrigerators, and so on.
The typical forex rate for the KRW/USD is ~1000:1, so Samsung would be a thousand dollar stock with a .99% dividend. Its market cap would be roughly 200B, putting it alongside Apple, Exxon, GE, and other Dow Jones companies.
What are the reasons the company might have for not being listed in the US, aside from on the pink sheets? What advantages and disadvantages would this pose for them? If they were listed, would you own them? I would.
