Depends on the REIT. If it is a "best of breed" REIT such as Vornado, Simon Property Group or Public Storage, and you can get into their acquisitions group, then yes, it is a solid starting spot. Otherwise, try to get into an Opportunity Fund or real estate investment banking group.

I half agree with bonuseason...

Ideally you'd start out with a RE IB group and if you decide you truly love to do real estate, then by all means dive into working for an actual REIT. (And of course, "best in breed" is the way to go. Plenty of great names out there--and the ones bonuseason mentioned are all outstanding companies--and some sub-par ones as well.)

But generally, I just think that the pigeonholing you go through in RE IB is enough as it is (I know from first hand experience)...working for a REIT only magnifies that.
