Watch recommendations for intern

So I will be interning at a BB in Asia this summer and thought I didn’t want to appear douchey by wearing a $5-10k watch that I bought using part of my investment returns.

My question is then: what’s a good watch (good movement and quality) to buy and to wear to work that wouldn’t make me look like a tool?

Thanks really appreciate it

You bought the watch, wear it.

Funny story, I was in the military and saw a chrome Gucci watch at the Base Exchange.

I think it was like $1250 discounted to $999. I wasn't really spending my money on anything so just bought it.

The 'Gucci G' watch. Mannie Fresh from the Big Tymers had the same watch.

Well, after I got out of the service I went to a military academy where 1 watch was permitted to wear.

Also, I was put in "G" company. There was no way I wasn't wearing that thing. I got crap from my company commander and he would tell me to take it off but I wouldn't, so I had to PT for it.

It was really funny, eventually I had to shine it and present it as an inspectable item, along with a dead mouse that I had to paint everyday...

Look at Seikos (the ones made in Japan, not the ones for North American markets) - they make their own movement (or also called “in-house” movement) and can range from $300 to in the mid to tens of thousands (for their Grand Seiko lines). Seiko is a respected by people that know watches.

Check out seiyajapan for Seiko’s from Japan:

A good starter diver and everyday beater watch is the SKX007, which Hodinkee also covered in a piece:

If you want something dressier, you can look at their SARB models, like this:

Citizen is probably similar. You can find Hamilton or Tissot in the sub 400-500 area. But if I wanted to look at a good starter watch i’d Go Seiko. Or if you want to pay something maybe sub $1000 you can look at Stowa (German brand with some history). They might require some delivery time and complexities of shipping though.

I have Longines HydroConquest Automatic. 300m water proof, Swiss automatic etc. It's over 1000 EUR and the build quality is excellent, but it does look very similar to Rolex Seadweller.

I think it's the best value for money in the 1000 (EUR/USD) range, if you like the looks.

Nomos and Tudor are good brands, but now you’re getting in the $2k and up range... Which defeats the purpose of if he wants a professional watch that flies under the radar or raise eyebrows from bankers that think kids that haven’t proven themselves shouldn’t be flashing their cash. They are (Nomos more so) low-key ish, but not cheap either. Do you really want to spend sub $2k on something for your summer?

If it’s just to get something for work that’s respectable and not showy, something in $300 to $500+ is probably best. (Sub $1k if you want to spend a bit more but In the low 000s you run the risk of overpaying for watches that aren’t worth that price tag).

just wear something simple...a leather band and a simple white analogue face...ideally costs less that $200. It doesn't take a fortune to be able to tell the time. You want to be known for you good work, your personality, your attention to detail in your work, your attitude, and your intelligence. If your clothes or jewelry get more attention that your reputation for being a great person to work with, you lower your chances of getting a FT offer. You want to appear hungry, but not poor. Essentially, you want to fit in. Rich kids often get looked down upon as "this guy doesn't need the job". Exceptions to this rule are for kids that have very well connected family...when you REALLY don't need the job.

just google it...you're welcome

Lots of respectable suggestions in this thread. I was expecting to hear tacky/flashy crap like Daniel Wellington, Burberry, and Tag Heuer. You don't need to break the bank to shit on anyone who wears that kinda stuff. Consider the following divers with workhorse movements that look great on ANY strap:

Orient Mako (or Ray) - ~$150 Christopher Ward C60 Trident Oris Aquis Longines Hydroconquest - ~$1000

If you're looking for something dressier, consider:

Orient Bambino - ~$120 Seiko SARB033 (or SARB035.. anything from the SARB line, really) Hamilton Jazzmaster Vintage Omega Seamaster (or Seamaster DeVille,, Constellation, Geneve) - ~$500

On the pricier side, consider ANYTHING from Nomos (Tangente, Ahoi, Orion, Metro). They are not flashy, so don't be insulted when some douche in a Rose Gold Michael Kors engages you passive aggressively. You'll get serious respect from the true watch geek crowd. NOMOS even has a line specifically designed for college students. These run ~$1500+.

Was wondering about this as well. Awesome thread.

Interesting. How come there seems to be this prevalent attitude of "don't stick out"?

I come from a rather interesting background and even if I were to dress the same, I doubt I would be able to simply blend into the analyst pool without sticking out (whether good or bad).

The watch is fine. Vintage Omega's are really nice and classy.

As for french cuffs, don't do it. Honestly, if you want, do it and you will soon see why you won't want to wear them at work. They fuck with typing on a keyboard and just get in the way. I have maybe a handful of french cuff shirts that only get worn on more formal occasions. Just not worth the grief.

Michael Kors is a really strong brand for girls and they're not absolute overkill on prices, so I'd look in that direction. Armani and Hilfiger are also on the cheaper side, but I personally would say these aren't the most feminine of brands. You could still browse, might find something that suits you.

If you can afford something more expensive, I'd look at Longines (I like all metallic, so Classic Présence is a good one) or Vivienne Westwood if you don't want to go to a known brand (i.e. Gucci, Versace).

Just my 2 cents, but you're a bit of a retard for buying such an expensive watch at this age. Do you know the time value of money? You'll barely use it, and if you use it you'll be perceived as a douche. Lastly the value of that watch is very unlikely to increase with few exceptions of some brands
