Visiting a Friend in Seattle, what to do?
I'll be visiting a friend in Seattle later this fall, what are some things to do around there? Coffee, the Space Needle, and the Boeing factory come to mind, but can't really think of anything else. Any recommendations (food, bars, sights, etc.) welcome.
I am a big fan of the ice cream from Kurtwood Farms. The plain,Jersey Cream flavor and the cheese flavored ice creams are great. There will be other home-made ice cream and hipster gelatto shops around town but Kurtwood, to me, is very unique due to its 'fresh cream' flavor.
Cheese flavored ice cream wtf, that’s a head turner
Try it :) The flavoring comes from the sunflower seed sized pieces of dry textured cheese.
Seattle born and raised. Listen...the best thing about the region isnt the bars and food...its the outdoors. Go to the cascades or puget sound islands. Mt rainier paradise lodge. Take the tram at crystal mt. Take a ferry somewhere. North cascade highway is breathtaking whens it open(closes for winter), better than the Alps.
I'll be there in the beginning of November so I really hope it won't be raining all the time or too dark. Thanks for the recommendations.
Echo @wherethefisdonny" 's comment. Get outside. An hour's drive east puts you in the wilderness.
I was going to make a comment about how if you wanted the true Seattle experience, then you should listen to live grunge in a damp bar in old Ballard in the dark and drizzle; but the truth is, the Seattle I grew up in is nearly unrecognizable today. Seattle was shittier then, but it at least had some character. Have you been to literally any other American city with a strong tech presence? Cool, then you've been to modern-day Seattle.
The mountains, though. They're worth seeing.
Yeah I guess that's true. That's the Seattle I would have loved to see instead of all this tech bullshit. I'll be visiting in the beginning of November, which sounds like it could suck. I'm fine with it being a little colder though, still lots of things to do outside for me.
check out Rattlesnake Ledge, its a nice short hike with an awesome view
I was just out there for a few days. I would advise checking out Pike's Place Market for sure. It is VERY crowded on the weekend, but the restaurants are solid and some of the local art is surprisingly good (you have to sort through a lot of mediocre content). I spent a day at Mount Rainer National Park and Olympic National Park, both are beautiful. Hikes are easy relative to say the Grand Tetons, but beautiful and serene. Bring swim trunks to Olympic if you go, it feels like bath water this time of year, it is so warm. If you can bring kayaks too, plenty of places to launch them. Have fun, it is a cool city. Fuck the space needly, do a architectural boat tour (pier 12 maybe?) they are really informative and serve booze. I would also take a ferry to one of the many islands, but if you do so don't bring a car (expensive and slows down your process greatly). If you are trying to eat/drink/pregame without breaking bank (I mean it's Seattle so even the high end places won't compare to NY/LA/CHI) you could check out Des Moines, it is slightly north and where a lot of the locals go out. I actually checked it out and really liked it, there is a Mexican place that is fire (I'll edit this post with the name if I can remember). If you do one thing though, eat breakfast at the Seatown Market Diner, it is along the bay in Pike's and was the BEST meal I had in all of Seattle hands down. I went way out of my way to go back one last time before my flight, it was that good.
Aside from enjoying the beautiful outdoors of Washington State, when in Seattle, I highly recommend you check out Von's, in downtown.
Was there in October. Stopped in for one drink and to rest our feet a bit, wound up eating and drinking there for over 4 hours and having a blast with the bartenders. Their food menu is fun and tasty [homemade pizza with prosciutto and pickled figs] and if you like to drink, they have a massive range of scotches and bourbons, they filter their own vodka, and make many interesting cocktails.
Drive up across the border to Vancouver, BC if you have time. About a 2-3 hour drive and possibly the most beautiful city in the world.
We were supposed to go there earlier this year but something came up, I really want to go check it out.
Turned out to be a pretty interesting place, every neighborhood had 4+ independent coffeeshops and dispensaries, which was crazy. Nightlife seemed to be somewhat lacking. My friend also pointed out that a very Seattle (more recently at least) thing to talk about is various apps' interfaces, which I witnessed myself a couple times. Another thing I noticed is that there didn't seem to be a whole lot of attractive women, generally mostly tech bros, a couple people mentioned that on the forum.
The Boeing factory in Everett was really cool though, hard to wrap my mind around how big it was.
Wish I could have stayed for longer, the weather was great but unfortunately I didn't get to explore as much as I'd hoped.
I missed the part about you visiting Kurtwood farms like we planned. :'(
