At least productive days in the gym with new PRs are epic.

You’re one odd dog.

It used to be fulfilling because working in IB etc paid a lot, gave some bragging rights, and satisfied my ego which was just another way of saying insecurity. Over time, perhaps it’s God’s work, I saw greater fulfillment from a different perspective. In some ways it’s directly helping others I work with/for, in other ways it’s to know that there are useful purposes served by my line of work, even if it’s just to contribute to pricing an asset or making something work more efficiently.  When I just started out, it was surely more exciting. I suspect I am happier today than those old days.

It’s funny you mentioned being fulfilled when with family. I was very career focused in my 20s and hardly talked to my family, but now in my 30s help to take care of my family and it is very fulfilling. I get direct positive feedback.

A word for those who say they aren't fulfilled due to not having connections with people in their lives I really think you can maintain a job in IB/PE whatever and maintain a healthy relationship with your family and close friends/significant others. Having gone through it in my early career as well as now to a degree, I've realized that it all comes down to prioritizing. If you're a banking analyst or PE associate who's getting totally railed at work, you are still absolutely capable of giving your parents that call every few days. It's just a matter of choosing to do so. Sure you are busy and don't have time for shit but realistically, you can find time to connect with those you care about given you probably find time to go out with colleagues etc whenever the opportunity presents itself. It takes no time to make a call and show someone close in your life that you remember them and want to reach out to see how they are. I know that may sound a bit hallmark-y but I really do think it's important to keep it in perspective that way
