AI/ML engineer (9 yrs, industrial), CFA L1, L2 in 2027, in Austria — can this profile break into DACH IB/PE ?

Reality check wanted from the European side.

9 years building production ML in heavy industry (steel, refractories, oil & gas). Two MScs, CFA L1 passed, L2 in 2027. Austria-based, German B2, citizenship in progress. Target window: late 2027–early 2028.

Three questions:

  1. Do European IB/PE shops hire ML engineers into deal-adjacent roles, or does that profile die in the IT/COO org?
  2. Does CFA matter for a technical lateral, or is it noise outside ER/AM?
  3. Is commodity/energy trading analytics (OMV, Verbund, Trafigura, Glencore) the more realistic door than IB?

Already doing: charterholder outreach, applications out, building an agentic AI project to close the gap.

Why are you trying to get into IB/PE? Your background doesn't really make sense for it. I'd argue you're overqualified for anything entry-level.

  1. They don't in IB, for PE maybe it's a niche strategy where that makes sense but I wouldn't know where to point you sorry
  2. Not at all, it's only for AM and it's dying off even there
  3. Such a wildly different space you're talking about which brings me back to my first question since the two don't really seem like normal choices for an "either or". Neither are career paths where you're going to get far in interviews when you look at the job as a "just because" and can't form a coherent story for "why".
