Favorite/Most Underrated Comedian?
After watching both Chapelle and Burr's new Netflix specials (Chapelle's was very good, but was a bit overrated by many in my opinion, I really enjoyed Burr's). I went perusing Youtube and found a clip of Anthony Jeselnik recently interviewing David Spade about his favorite joke of all time, which happened to be Spade's from a mid 90s special "Did you guys hear about the Jonbenet Ramsay case? I remember reading about it in the inquirer and thinking man shes not that hot without makeup. Seriously, shes ok, kinda cute, but average. I mean shes talented, but not a stunner." Spade to me is one of my favorites and genuinely isnt talked about enough, think a lot of that has to do with coming up with Rock, Farley, hell even Sandler at that time in their early SNL days. Who are your favorites out there, anyone who you feel is underrated and their work needs to be checked out/appreciated more?
Pablo Francisco
Softbank
ADAM NEUMANN makes my softbank a HARDBANK what a hottie
Jeselnik
edit: I saw him at the comedy store in 2017, I hadn't heard of him before that night. Line up was stacked, Mark Maron, Rogan, David Spade, and several other headliners.
Jeselnik went after Rogan and absolutely murdered
good call. Tosh standup as well
Jeselnik to me is the GOAT right now of dark humor. His misdirection on his punchlines are some of the best out there and his delivery is just perfect as a smug asshole.
Mitch hedberg.
Tom segura
But bill burr is my spirit animal and Chappelle is the GOAT so you have good taste. Check out bill burrs podcast
+1 on Segura
BIKES
+1 Mitch Hedberg
delivery style, cadence between the one-liners
Norm Macdonald
Would give you silver bananas if I had them. Best weekend update host ever and dirty work is one of the funniest movies 21 years later.
Only question is what happened to Dr. Farthing?
Norm is severely underrated, especially when it comes to SNL. He was far ans away the best weekend update and when he went through a couple years of always throwing in an OJ Simpson joke in the update, that really isnt talked about enough.
Norm is the best comedian of all time. Sure there are more popular people, but no one can make a joke like Norm. He once told a joke where he told everyone the punchline at the start of the "set". It was like a 20 min long joke with a handful of complete bits baked in. He then built up to the punchline he told the audience at the start of the set and got one of the biggest laughs ever. The clip interviewed people at the end of the show and everyone said various versions of "we knew the punchline but were still caught off guard".
Personally, that long punch line has me tune out. But anyone should just google Norm doing the White House Correspondents Dinner, or the ESPYS. That is how you roast.
Was going to say Norm as my #1 pick especially for "under rated", but will throw Brian Regan into the hat. There isn't a funnier clean comic.
Katt Williams.
Thank you.
Many of the greats have been named above (Bill Burr & Chapelle)
Gotta mention Eddie Griffin
based
stanhope is pretty funny on the jre i haven't seen much of his standup though
Yeah the Chappelle special wasn't just weak, it wasn't really funny at all. There were a select few jokes that felt like old Chappelle, but it was mostly just a guy ranting about things this time around. Even my friends that are big Chappelle stans were only trying to half-heartedly defend it
Theo Von, though his Netflix special sucked, his podcasts are next level
I saw his special and it was horrible, I had no idea why there were a lot of people raving about him. I feel like his podcast works since he plays off of his guests really well.
Wish he had literally anyone else besides Brendan on the king and the sting lol, I watched s this past weekend episode where he jokes about having an adult sized penis at fives years old and it’s still one of the funniest things I’ve ever see
Wouldn't say underrated, more so just still up-and-coming, but Jerrod Carmichael is great. His delivery is fantastic
Russell Peters is very funny. Check him out on YouTube...
Andrew Schultz is blowing up right now as well. He is one of the best comics I have ever seen when it comes to playing off crowds.
I was surprised no one had mentioned him thus far
Hannibal Buress!
Second Andrew Schulz listed above, he performs nightly in NYC if any of you monkeys can ever make it.
Bert Kreischer is another favorite of mine.
Patrice O'Neal.
He was better than Burr, and maybe Chappelle, maybe.....
A sleeper is Big Jay Oakerson,
Greg Giraldo was hilarious.
Brian Regan is the best clean comic I've ever seen.
Eddie Izzard if you enjoy intellectual comedy, his stuff is extremely well thought out and brilliant. He beat out Chris Rock for best comedian a decade back.
Damon Wayans.
Patrice was phenomenal, dude was as good with the audience as anyone. Giraldo was potentially the best roaster of all time, crude and straight to the point joke with bite. Shame both guys are gone. Wayans is someone that is brutally underrated by the majority of people, especially anyone who hasnt seen any of his act and just him and his brothers movies.
Patrice O'Neal was FANTASTIC. I absolutely agree with you that he might be better than Chappelle. His jokes were brilliant, facial expression/body language was on point, and sounded so smooth. Guys like Bill Burr and Chris Rock are good too but their voices man... they can be annoying af.
Patrice O'Neal would have been a household name if he could have lived longer. Extrapolate his material and I think you have one of the greatest comedians ever.
Here is the thing, he didn't want to be. He turned roles down partly because he didn't want to play the "game". Craig Robinson....poor man's Patrice O'Neal. Patrice was in the office series, but didn't want to suck up to anyone or compromise any of his "gift" to assuage producers.
He was offered numerous roles, but ddint' want to take direction
The Black Phillip show was dope.
Most people listen to music whilst making love to spreadsheets, I listen to BP! Props for great taste!
Everybody check our Mark Normand. One of the funniest comedians in the NYC scene.
Just saw him on Rogan's podcast and his stuff is pretty damn funny, his voice is just perfect of a comic of his style as well.
Really like him as well
Sam Hyde if you're into weird Gen Z humor
I'd put Eric Andre in this category as well
Owen Benjamin
The guy is funny, but has gone off the deep end politically....I follow him on IG
Anyone should youtube "Owen Benjamin and coldplay"
Let's get those rogan's up.
Mike Birbiglia
How has no one mentioned George Carlin? absolute legend
Not underrated.
title of thread is "Favorite/Most Underrated"
Sam Morril - one of the most distinct voices in comedy. Recently got a small feature in the new Joker movie if you've seen it.
Patrice O'Neal was the greatest comedian of all time.
