Craigslist for years. But, check out a lot of places and meet a lot of people.

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

Craigslist. There are creepers on there, but trust me when I say that living with someone you met on Grindr is a recipe for strife. Go with your gut, and when in doubt, bail. You may also want to see some sort of financial info like a paystub (and be prepared to share your own) and lay down the ground rules ahead of time.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

How? You're saying the cons will outweigh the pros in the long run? Yes, it's harder than dropping half your check on a condo. Do you want to build wealth or not? When I started thinking about getting into real estate, nobody said, 'Oh that's fucking awesome that you're going to take control of your life while adding value to society!' They said, 'You're going to have to deal with maintenance calls at midnight and go bankrupt.' Well they're still fucking wage slaves and I run 4 businesses now.

Hi Bud, Try out www.diggz.co they are fairly new to offer services in Houston but there are some good prospects. It's fairly simple to browse through roommates, free to use, and no need to download anything. On Diggz you can find someone with a room, someone that's looking for a room, or pair up with someone and find a place of your own. Good luck!

Back in ye' old days, when I moved to a new city I used the Roomster site. It's designed for roommate situations in specific, and way more streamlined than Craigslist. In addition, they verify user profiles, so you know the person you are connecting with is a) real, and b) you can see some info about them before you meet. I actually ended up finding a great living situation through there once.

Check it out. Hope it helps!

I'm starting IBD FT this summer and looking for 1-2 flatmates in London.

Start date: July first Preferred lease start: mid-June Male Area: Central London (West End, Covent Garden, Soho etc..) but am pretty flexible and willing to move further down towards London Bridge area if people are going to be in CW.

PM me if interested, cheers.

My roommate is moving to WA and I need to sublet half of my 2-BD apartment in Paulus Hook, Jersey City:

-Tax-free Paulus Hook; five minute walk from PATH to WTC and 33rd street. -Your share of the rent: $910/month -Spot opens up in late April/early May. (need to double-check). -Lease ends September 1st. -12th floor in a high rise; decent view of Hoboken and North Jersey. -Parking available, but very walkable section of town. -Laundry in building.

24/Male. Work in options trading in mid-town; 40 minutes door-to-door to Times Square.

Willing to consider summer interns, too. Just need to fill the spot for the summer.

Barcadia:
as a young finance student it really bothers me to see bankers shopping around for bargains... (lower is worse)
That was the slogan three years ago, but the fact is that the 30 years of crazy consumer spending is over. Bankers tend to be better at understanding personal finance than a lot of folks and might be more inclined to follow the old rule of not spending more than 30% of your take-home pay on housing. That works out to $1200/month for most first-year analysts.

Folks are looking to save money and keep expenses under control. The last thing we want to do is end up like our parents.

just a heads up to you guys. I'll entering ft this yr also, and last year I went looking at appartments with my buddy who was starting ft. I'll give you my brief experience.

Basically, with few exceptions if your looking at nyc so if you have a questions just send me a message and maybe i can help.

gluck everybody -sorry, i wrote this very quickly

[quote=samiam1234]Basically, with few exceptions if your looking at IBD and work in the numbered streets, it would probably be wise to consider Hoboken, too. Downtown Hoboken costs about $100/month more than JC but it's worth every penny at 2 AM when the train from 33rd street stops there for 15 minutes before continuing on to Newport and Grove Street.

I normally advocate being thrifty your first year, but if you can find a walk-up in Hoboken that will cost you less than $1200/month in rent, the extra $100 is worth every penny if it saves you 15 minutes every evening.

Financial district has the lowest rents of any decent neighborhood in Manhattan believe it or not, and the listings are mostly luxury buildings that have your gym, doorman, roof deck, lounge, dry cleaning, etc.

Know friends who found a huge 2 BR convert 3 for 3300 in a nice new development down off of Wall Street.

City: NYC Preferred Areas: Anywhere along the westside subway, that will give me a straight shot to Tribeca.

Hey guys. Please just PM me if you are interested. Then we can move on from there. I am just looking for someone that will be comfortable to live with, no hassles. Pretty laid back, but not a frat boy, so nothing too crazy in the apartment. We will probably barely see each other anyway...haha. Anyway let me know!

DaCarez:
Is there a consensus on living w/ coworkers? Yay or nay? Assume you somewhat know the person beforehand
If you just work for the same firm, that's probably ok.

I've never seen anyone live with someone who works on the same team. It would be very difficult if you didn't absolutely enjoy your work to have work follow you home every evening. CC: doing homework while sitting on your bed during the day makes it harder to fall asleep at night.

I lived with Craigslist randoms for a couple years in my early/mid 20s (a bunch of fully-furnished ~4 month sublets) without any real problems. I suggest living with attractive girls, as that will drastically improve your social circe (but it'll making shitting in your apartment awkward at times).

Yes, I'm currently in the same boat. From what I've seen, craigslist is the place to go. Are you in consulting and just want a room?

More housing options should be on the market nearing new years, as people generally don't move during the winter.

Consider living in Jersey City or Hoboken? They are up and coming, close commute, and rent is slightly cheaper...slightly.

Guys- want to live with attractive girls? Lower the rent and I'll find you some great tenants no prob.

I have yet to visit Hoboken, but have friends that live there and commute to the city. They love it.

Interested as well. Moving to New York next year and would like to get a couple of roomates. Would like to spend about $1,200 in rent and live in Midtown or close to the green line.

Good question... I'd like to live ideally with 2 more people and pay $1,200 each. Is this reasonable? How good (or bad) would be a $3,600 3-bedroom apartment in Manhattan?

On the other hand, if I were to live with 3 more people, rent will be in total $4,800 for a 4-bedroom. Do you think we can get a decent 4-b apartment for this amount of money?

Finally, if I had to pay around $1,500 and share my apartment, I would frankly rather rent my own studio. That's why $1200-1300 (total rent $4000 max for 3-people, $5000 max for 4-people) is my limit for a shared apartment.

Any comments on this?

Definitely $1,200/person should be the maximum, at least from my perspective, that a person should pay to share an apartment. You can find a studio in Manhattan for $1,500 and, if you're lucky, even less. Thus, if you're going to pay more than $1,200, it makes more sense to just live by yourself.

After working long hours in the office, you're going to want to come home to a nice pad. Sack up the money because it's worth it. Me and 3 buddies pay 1,500 and we have a 2 story apartment with 4 bedrooms, 2 bath, kitchen, living room, and a 20 by 10 balcony on the roof.

PaperTrail:
Wouldn't banker roommates be good? That way no one has time to trash the apartment. If you have a roomie working 9-5 then they have more time to party and tear up the living room/kitchen.

Exactly.

urbanhostess has a connection website - some firms use it

1200 is LOW for NYC. before the crisis - it was impossible to get a place for under 1,500 each shared and converted (2 in a 1 bedroom, etc). You can do that in the upper east side, and some other lower rent areas, it is very difficult to find a one bedroom for under 2400 with decent space.

my two bedroom costs more than 3,600 - good luck getting a 3 under 3,600.

also - if you're working banking hours - get a doorman. they can hold your drycleaning and packages for you until you get back home.

if you're sharing an apartment, utilties go down as well per person.

in addition - in NYC, people do not refer to the subway line by colors - by numbers or street route. 4,5,6 (more common) or the Lexington avenue line (less common) vs. the "green line".

I am also a 2007 analyst and am trying to figure out my living situation in NYC. I think my start date is around August 1, 2007.

Starting a roommate finding topic/group is a good idea.

bluechip:
whats a reasonable amount to spend in NY housing. it is awful to note that most of the time you wont be in the house, so y pay $2K
because you don't want to spend an extra 2 hours commuting, when you could use that time sleeping.

If you work 9 to 2, would you rather leave home at 8:45 and come from work at 2:15? OR would you rather leave home at 7:45 to catch a train, and be home at 3:00(or later since at night train service is much more rare).

And yes I know you get the black car at night, but it'll still take a good amount of time to drive you home

Hi I am a 2007 analyst. I am also looking for a roommate. I would love to talk to anybody in the same boat. My training starts next summer as well.

personally I would pick a roommate that isn't in IB.

Think about it, if you pick a roommate in IB, your work life and your home life will be the same. Same boring people, and same boring discussions about IB.

But if you pick one thats not in IB, you'll get the information on whats happening in the world outside of IB, and the person might actually throw parties/invite women to the house.

  • its a good idea to have someone who'll actually be able to stay home to take care of emergencies etc.

But thats just my 2 cents.

Disclaimer: The post above has been made by someone who is not currently employed in IBD, and has not had an interview yet...

If you live with a roomate who is not IB he/she wont really understand where you're coming from. Eg when you dont have time to wash dishes/get toilet paper.

Also might be really loud or annoying when all you want is a few hours of sleep. (ie after pulling a few all nighters, even if its thursday or fri night)

If I find a place by then, you can crash on my floor for $700/month.

Only conditions are that you have to do my laundry, wash the dishes and cook food for me. Oh yea and keep the house clean.

Seanc, I can do that for 700/month :D MS doesn't help with housing and they don't release other interns' name, so HR is not helpful at all. Even if NYU's timeline worked, they're full. Still looking for a roommate...

I think that the places reserved on water st. are usually for the ms prime brokerage interns and interns in other divisions housed downtown. I believe that ms usually has some housing reserved in midtown on the west side for interns working in times square.

If you post on craigslist under the rooms/shared section, you should get a ton of replies. I know because I have been looking for a room, and every person I met with told me the response from craigslist was overwhelming. Sent you a pm.
