Background Check
Interview
I had two rounds of interviews with Credit Suisse for their IBCM division. The process started with an initial communication from the recruitment team, who scheduled my interviews after reviewing my profile. The first interview was with a Vice President (VP), where we discussed my background, motivations, and technical knowledge, including valuation methods and financial concepts. The VP also asked several behavioral questions to assess my fit for the team and the firm.

The second round was with a Managing Director (MD), and it felt more intense and in-depth. The MD focused on my technical skills and problem-solving abilities, testing my knowledge of financial modeling, market trends, and the broader investment banking landscape. There were also behavioral questions, but the MD seemed more interested in gauging my strategic thinking, leadership potential, and long-term goals within the firm.

Throughout the process, the interviewers emphasized the importance of culture fit, looking for individuals who not only have strong technical skills but who also thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Both interviews were professional, and while the atmosphere was challenging, it was clear that they value well-rounded candidates who can excel both individually and in teams.

For anyone preparing for this process, my advice would be to brush up on technical concepts, particularly valuation techniques, and be prepared for behavioral questions that test your character and fit for Credit Suisse. It’s important to demonstrate a passion for investment banking and show that you understand the firm's position in the market. Additionally, having a clear vision of how you want to contribute to the team and the firm’s goals will set you apart.
Interview Questions
One of the most difficult questions I encountered during my interviews was when the VP asked, "Walk me through a time when you had to make a decision with limited information and how you approached it."

This was unexpected as it wasn’t a typical technical or case-based question. It required me to reflect on a real experience and showcase my problem-solving and decision-making skills. I answered by describing a situation where I had to make a strategic recommendation for a project with incomplete data. I emphasized how I used available resources, collaborated with team members for insights, and relied on my judgment to make an informed decision while mitigating risks.

Another challenging question came from the MD, who asked, "What do you think is the biggest issue facing the investment banking industry today, and how do you think Credit Suisse can respond?" This was tough because it required both industry knowledge and a clear understanding of Credit Suisse’s strategic goals. I responded by discussing the increasing focus on sustainability and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) factors and suggested that Credit Suisse should continue to lead in these areas, especially given their strong commitment to responsible banking.

These questions stood out because they required me to think critically and strategically beyond technical finance knowledge, showing how I could apply my skills to real-world challenges and understand the broader context of the industry.

I applied through an employee referral for analyst position in the Mumbai Office (Investment Banking team). I was called in to the office for a super day, where i was interviewed by by most of the senior team (6-7 VPs / Directors). Most of the questions were around prior deal experience or were technical in nature.
One of the VPs discussed one of my prior hospital deals in detail, and also asked a few questions around key metrices.

Got through the rounds and I was subsequently scheduled to speak with 2 MDs. Those interviews were more around fit and motivation to join the team. Overall process took around 1 month.
Interview Questions
Asked me to provide specific metrices about the industry (Hospitals). Asked to do a du pont analysis for a Hospital asset.

As I logged into the Teams meeting, I was greeted by the two directors. The digital interface brought a sense of formality to the proceedings as we exchanged virtual greetings. Despite the physical distance, the atmosphere was charged with the anticipation that typically accompanies a job interview.

The first director, initiated the conversation with a series of technical questions, assessing my knowledge of financial markets and investment strategies. The Teams platform facilitated seamless screen sharing, allowing me to present data and charts to support my responses. Navigating through the virtual environment, I made use of the digital whiteboard feature to illustrate my analytical approaches, creating a dynamic and engaging presentation.

The second director, then shifted the focus to my soft skills and ability to collaborate. Utilizing the Teams breakout room feature, she simulated a teamwork scenario where I had to collaborate with virtual team members to address a complex problem. This exercise not only tested my ability to work collaboratively in a virtual setting but also demonstrated the versatility of my communication skills within the constraints of an online platform.

Throughout the interview, both directors utilized the Teams chat feature to exchange notes and coordinate their questions. This added an element of coordination and efficiency to the process, ensuring a thorough assessment of my capabilities from different perspectives.

As the virtual interview concluded, both directors expressed their gratitude for my participation. They outlined the next steps in the hiring process, and I left the virtual meeting room with a sense of accomplishment.
