AM Internship Timeline/Process

I am pivoting from IB and SNT networking and research to potentially look into asset management; however, I'm not really sure how the process works for am. Is it the same timeline as ib/snt. Also any advice would be appreciated.

The timeline and process for securing an asset management internship can differ somewhat from investment banking or sales and trading. Here are some key points to consider based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Recruitment Timeline: Asset management recruitment can be less structured compared to investment banking. While larger firms may have set recruitment cycles similar to IB, many asset management firms recruit on an as-needed basis. It's common for recruitment to happen year-round, but peak times can align with typical finance recruitment cycles in the fall.

  2. Networking: This is crucial in asset management just as it is in IB. Start by connecting with professionals in the industry through LinkedIn, alumni networks, or finance events. Express your interest in asset management and seek informational interviews.

  3. Research: Deepen your understanding of the asset management industry. Know the different types of asset managers (e.g., mutual funds, hedge funds, pension funds) and what distinguishes them from each other. This knowledge will be beneficial in interviews and networking conversations.

  4. Skill Set: Asset management firms often look for candidates with strong analytical skills, a good grasp of financial markets, and the ability to make informed investment decisions. Enhance these skills through courses, certifications (like CFA), or practical experience.

  5. Application Process: Apply through the firm’s careers page, via networking, or through campus recruitment if available. Tailor your resume to highlight relevant experience and skills in financial analysis, market research, and any investment-related internships.

  6. Interview Preparation: Be prepared to discuss your investment philosophy, walk through your thought process on investment cases, and demonstrate your market knowledge. Technical questions could cover financial modeling, valuation techniques, and market trends.
