Asset Allocation Analyst roles
Question is related to the activites of an asset allocation Analyst. I’ve just recently started looking into these opportunities and my general take is that you do macro level analysis versus in an equity reserach postion there would be a lot more micro analysis (company level) involved.
Can anyone give some insight into the day-to-day or typical career path? Any color that people could provide would be great.
As an FYI, my background is finance and accounting major, MSA, CPA, Big 4 audit (3 years) to consulting firm (technical accounting, modeling, valuation, corp finance, etc). Sitting for Leve II CFA in June. I’m 26. Looking to transition to pure valuation, ER, or asset allocation role.
In asset allocation roles what you might get up to could be quite a mix from looking at countries like an economist to working out the best way to execute trades (does a swap make more sense or trade the stocks in-house?). My understanding is that, as you say, the job is far more macro focused and you will be spending a lot of time thinking like a fixed income investor (looking at interest rates, monetary policy etc) and would probably not delve too much into asset specifics. Expect (some to max out) quantitative work on portfolio optimization, looking at the effect of simulations on expected returns or maybe some coding if you're lucky. On career progression I'm not sure there's much more to it, in many firms you could start from research roles and progress into fund manager or maybe from portfolio management assistant to research to fund manager.

Wondering if any other monkeys are Investment Analysts focused on asset allocation? Curious about your path, favorite reads. I am on the wealth management side, but perspective on am, wm, or hf (global macro funds?).
