finally made it to front office - where do I go from here?

About me - came from a back office/middle office but very generalist role at a start up AM firm that became quite successful (literally started as intern in a mail room mailing out information to prospects - moved up to operations then to product management and development). Firm got taken out by a big fish where they offered me a very silo-ed job in an area I didn't like so I left to go to grad school. Got hired into a front office at a fairly sizable and reputable firm where I help PM a sizeable pot of money in equities to models developed by our quants (trading strategy, optimization etc, day to day crossing the Ts and dotting Is to make sure the portfolios don't blow up but not the overarching strategy on the portfolio). Though I am learning a ton this is the first time I haven't had a further goal to work towards - when I started in the mail room getting to the front office was my long term goal so I basically geared my five year plan to that. The quants all have PhDs and the firms like it like that (gives them the air of respectability I guess) and I have no interest in a PhD so I have 0 shot there (absolutely 0 non PhDs in that group). I want to have more discretion and be making bigger calls - I personally think I would enjoy global macro, but also enjoyed my time at the start up firm due to the street fighting level business experience - so if I wanted to get to a macro fund or to PE what is my strategy? (already got the CFA in the bag). Please try to refrain from being cynical, I know I have a cush job that's hard to mess up and have been told a few times to sit my ass there, but I like to have a game plan to work on and really enjoy when the pressure is on. Thanks for any non-cynical input.
