Getting rejected/ghosted because of doing 2 internships simultaneously?

Hi All,

Current Junior here at a semi-target looking to intern in AM/PB/IM, but I’m not getting as many interviews as I thought I would . I have had referrals, near perfect GPA, relevant club and internship experience but I will not even make it to most first round interviews.

I’m beginning to worry that me working two internships the previous summer may be the cause. Both internships last summer were part time. I interned at a BB doing AM going in the office MWF and clocking in about 30 hours a week, while simultaneously doing Business Dev at a nonprofit clocking 20 hrs/wk on Tues/Thurs. They both started the same week, and ended the same week.

Is this an issue? And if so, what should I do? I’ve gotten mixed responses on whether doing two internships simultaneously is a red flag.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice regarding your situation:

  1. Mixed Responses on Dual Internships:

    • Pros: Demonstrates strong time management skills, ability to handle multiple responsibilities, and a diverse skill set.
    • Cons: Potential employers might question your commitment and focus, wondering if you were able to fully dedicate yourself to either role.
  2. Addressing Concerns:

    • Clarify in Interviews: If you get to the interview stage, be prepared to explain how you managed both internships effectively. Highlight any achievements or specific contributions you made in each role.
    • Resume and Cover Letter: Ensure your resume and cover letter clearly articulate the skills and experiences gained from both internships. Emphasize how these experiences make you a strong candidate for the roles you are applying for.
  3. Feedback and Improvement:

    • Seek Feedback: If you haven't already, ask for feedback from the companies where you were rejected. This can provide insights into whether the dual internships are a concern or if there are other areas for improvement.
    • Mock Interviews: Practice with mock interviews focusing on how to present your dual internship experience positively.
  4. Networking:

    • Leverage Referrals: Continue to use your network for referrals. Personal recommendations can sometimes help overcome concerns about your resume.
    • Build Relationships: Attend industry events, reach out to alumni, and engage with professionals in your target field to build stronger connections.
  5. Application Strategy:

    • Targeted Applications: Focus on quality over quantity. Tailor each application to the specific role and company, highlighting the most relevant aspects of your experience.
    • Highlight Commitment: In your applications, emphasize your commitment to the field and your long-term career goals to counter any concerns about your focus.

By addressing these points, you can better position yourself and potentially alleviate any concerns employers might have about your dual internship experience.
