How does knowing a top portfolio manager affect my chances?

I am a sophomore at a well ranked LAC in the states. Through incredible luck, I happen to be family friends with a senior global equity PM at one of the most elite institutional AM firms in the world. (e.g. Blackrock, State Street, Wellington, BNY Mellon, etc.)

I want to make it clear that this is my one shot at making it big. I did not come from the extraordinary wealth and privilege that such relationships are usually associated with, and I am fully aware that I would be starting from the bottom. T

The PM expressed vaguely that he would be interested in helping me out, but I have a few questions. I deeply appreciate any help you could provide.

1. Would a PM of this caliber typically have the discretion to bring someone external to the firm onto his team?

2. If he did, and assuming I would be interviewed the same as any analyst, how would it affect my chances?

3. Would it be inappropriate for me to ask my junior year as opposed to my senior year?

4. Have you witnessed anything like this happening yourself?

Thank you!

I think your base case should be that he can get you an interview but after that you’re on your own. I would ask him asap - your chances are a lot better for an internship than a FT, and I’m sure he can advise on prep. All he’s going to want from you in return is for your to work your ass off prepping for the interviews and showing how hungry you are for this chance. Nothing worse than when you stick your neck out for someone and then they half ass it
