How to break into emerging market investing?

My friend told me his uncle used to work in emerging markets investing(owned a fund). I did a little research into the field and am interested in it. I love travelling and it feels as if it would feel fulfilling. I read a way to break in was to do equity research overseas however, I am not sure. How did people in this subreddit break in? Does anyone know the career progression, pay, work life balance of working in EM.
