I'm not happy in Private Banking role at BB, what is the best plan to take

Y2 analyst at MS/GS/JPM working 50ish hours a week and making decent money. I just don't do anything meaningful or challenging and feel stuck. Think I'm limiting myself in terms of earning potential and am motivated to do more. I was thinking of the below options would be my best path forward and open to any other suggestions:

  • Trying to lateral to AM
  • MBA and then IB route? or what would be a better substitute?
  • IR analyst?

    Anything else?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a breakdown of your options and potential paths forward:

  1. Lateral to Asset Management (AM):

    • If you enjoy markets and want a more analytical and investment-focused role, AM could be a great fit. It offers a balance of meaningful work and decent hours, with the potential for strong earning growth over time. Networking and leveraging your BB experience will be key to making this transition.
  2. Pursue an MBA and Transition to Investment Banking (IB):

    • An MBA from a top program can open doors to IB roles, especially if you target M&A, Capital Markets, or Corporate Advisory. IB offers higher earning potential and more challenging work, but be prepared for long hours (80+ per week). This route is ideal if you're motivated by the prestige and exit opportunities IB provides, such as Private Equity or Corporate Strategy.
  3. Investor Relations (IR) Analyst:

    • IR could be a good fit if you enjoy relationship-building and communication. It’s less intense than IB but still offers exposure to corporate strategy and financial markets. However, the earning potential and career growth may be more limited compared to AM or IB.
  4. Other Suggestions:

    • Private Equity (PE): If you’re interested in deal-making and have a strong analytical skill set, PE could be a great long-term goal. You might need to transition through IB or an MBA first.
    • Corporate Development/Strategy: These roles allow you to work on M&A and strategic initiatives within a corporation. They offer a better work-life balance than IB while still being challenging and impactful.
    • Tech or FinTech Roles: If you’re open to exploring outside of traditional finance, tech companies or FinTech startups often value BB experience and offer innovative, fast-paced environments.

Recommendation:

  • If you’re looking for a balance of meaningful work, earning potential, and career growth, lateral to AM or pursue an MBA for IB/PE are your strongest options.
  • Start networking aggressively, refine your story, and consider taking relevant certifications (e.g., CFA for AM or GMAT for MBA prep) to strengthen your profile.
