JP Morgan’s internship experience

My first internship at JP Morgan in London as an asset management analyst felt like stepping into a world that moved faster than anything I had experienced before. From the very first morning, walking into the glass-fronted office in Canary Wharf, there was a palpable sense of urgency and precision in the air, as if every second carried weight.

I was assigned to a team that focused on multi-asset portfolios, which meant I had exposure to equities, fixed income, and alternative investments all at once. Initially, the sheer volume of information was overwhelming—market updates, client reports, internal models—but over time, patterns began to emerge, and I started to understand how everything connected. My day typically began with reviewing overnight market movements, particularly in the U.S. and Asia, and summarizing key developments for the team. I quickly learned that clarity and brevity mattered just as much as insight.

One of my main responsibilities involved supporting analysts with performance reports, where I had to ensure data accuracy down to the smallest decimal. It may sound tedious, but it taught me discipline and attention to detail in a way no classroom ever could. What stood out most was how collaborative the environment was; despite the high stakes, senior team members were approachable and willing to explain not just what they were doing, but why. I remember sitting in on client calls where portfolio managers discussed strategy shifts in response to macroeconomic signals, and it struck me how much trust clients placed in their judgment. There were also moments of pressure, like when I had to prepare materials for a last-minute meeting, but those experiences forced me to become more efficient and confident in my work.

Outside of the technical skills, I gained a deeper appreciation for how global finance operates—how decisions made in one market ripple across others, and how managing assets is as much about managing risk as it is about seeking returns. By the end of the internship, I wasn’t just more knowledgeable; I felt more composed, more curious, and more certain that this was a field where I wanted to build a career.
