Lateral in AM, mid-level?

I feel like I have topped out my opportunity at my current firm (Large but middle-of-the-road AM in T1 city). Comp isnt scaling up and neither is title / coverage.

I've been on the buy-side for 5 years, sell side 5 yrs prior to that. I don't have a ton of contacts in the industry so I'm having a ton of difficulty getting info on new openings. What would be the best way to lateral with my background?

Ah, the classic case of feeling like you've hit a ceiling in your current role – a situation many in the finance world find themselves in at one point or another. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a tailored strategy for someone in your shoes looking to make a lateral move in asset management (AM) at a mid-level:

  1. Networking, Networking, Networking: It's time to leverage every connection you have and even make new ones. Since you mentioned a lack of contacts, start by reaching out to former colleagues from both the buy-side and sell-side stints. Alumni networks can also be incredibly valuable. Don't overlook the power of platforms like LinkedIn for reconnecting with old colleagues and reaching out to new contacts in firms you're interested in. Remember, it's not just about asking for job leads but also gathering industry insights and advice.

  2. Utilize Recruiters: Specialized recruiters in the asset management space can be a goldmine for opportunities that aren't publicly advertised. Given your 10 years of experience, you're an attractive candidate, and recruiters can help position you for roles that match your skill set and career aspirations.

  3. Craft Your Narrative: Be ready to articulate why you're looking to make a move and why now. This narrative should highlight your achievements, what you bring to the table, and how you can add value to a new firm. Given your experience on both the buy-side and sell-side, you have a unique perspective that can be very appealing to potential employers.

  4. Skill Up: If there are any gaps in your skill set or new areas of asset management that interest you, consider taking courses or certifications to bolster your resume. This shows initiative and a commitment to your career development.

  5. WSO Resources: Dive into the WSO forums and job listings. There are often threads discussing open positions, and you might find valuable advice from others who have successfully made lateral moves in AM. Plus, the WSO job board can be a great place to find listings that are directly relevant to your experience and aspirations.

  6. Prepare for Interviews: Brush up on your interview skills, focusing on behavioral questions and your professional narrative. Be ready to discuss your past roles, achievements, and how they've prepared you for the next step in your career. Practice makes perfect, so consider mock interviews or leveraging interview prep resources.

Remember, patience and persistence are key. Lateral moves can take time, especially at the mid-level where roles can be highly competitive. Keep pushing forward, and don't get discouraged by setbacks. Your next great opportunity could be just around the corner.
