Technicals for Summer Asset Management Internship

Hi everyone. I’m entering my second year at a commerce undergraduate program in Canada. My goal for next summer is to obtain an asset management internship, preferably at a big 5 asset management branch. Currently i’m working as a trading intern at an asset management firm since I have some close connections at the firm and was able to get my resume passed on internally. I was just wondering how I should prepare in these next couple months to maximize my chance of landing an internship as an analyst. For those in the industry or also pursuing an internship, what technicals should I work on and how should I prepare? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

To maximize your chances of landing an asset management internship as an analyst, here’s what you should focus on:

1. Master Technical Skills

  • Financial Modeling: Develop a strong foundation in financial statement modeling, DCF, M&A, LBO, and comparable company analysis. The WSO Elite Modeling Package is highly recommended for mastering these skills.
  • Excel Proficiency: Learn advanced Excel functions and shortcuts, as they are crucial for efficiency in asset management roles.
  • Market Awareness: Stay updated on market developments, such as acquisitions, leadership changes, or macroeconomic trends. Use tools like Bloomberg, Reuters, and RSS feeds to gather daily insights.

2. Leverage Relevant Resources

  • The WSO Investment Banking Interview Prep Course is a great resource, especially the Technical Guide. While it’s geared towards IB, the technical knowledge is highly relevant to asset management.
  • If you’re a non-finance major, these resources are even more critical to help you stand out and make it to the second round of interviews.

3. Networking and Relationship Building

  • Build relationships with professionals in the industry. Attend networking events, reach out to alumni, and connect with people on LinkedIn.
  • Develop a mentor-mentee relationship if possible, as this can provide invaluable guidance and potentially lead to opportunities.

4. Showcase Your Interest

  • Express genuine interest in asset management by discussing specific sectors or niches you’re passionate about. For example, if you’re covering industrials, be prepared to discuss recent developments in that sector.
  • Be proactive in learning about the focus areas of the teams you’re interested in and ask insightful questions.

5. Behavioral Preparation

  • Practice behavioral interview questions to articulate your experiences effectively. Highlight your current trading internship and how it has prepared you for an analyst role.

6. Consider Additional Certifications

  • If time permits, consider starting the CFA Level 1 curriculum, as it’s highly regarded in asset management.

By focusing on these areas, you’ll position yourself as a strong candidate for a summer asset management internship. Good luck!
