Useful courses outside of modelling?

Looking to further develop my skills in areas relevant for buyside (LO) equity analysts. Am more than sufficient in modelling, so I’m looking for other interesting and useful areas to learn from. General accounting may be an area for some improvement, but my current knowledge level is more than enough for my job so my preference would go to more niche/specialised areas (something like forensic/earnings management type accounting, or something else entirely). Any tips/experiences would be helpful. Thanks!

For a buyside (long-only) equity analyst looking to expand beyond modeling, here are some highly relevant and niche areas to consider based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Forensic Accounting and Earnings Management

  • This is a fantastic area to dive into, as it helps you identify red flags in financial statements and assess the quality of earnings. Courses or resources on forensic accounting can teach you how to spot aggressive revenue recognition, off-balance-sheet liabilities, or other manipulative practices.

2. Behavioral Finance

  • Understanding investor psychology and market behavior can give you an edge in anticipating market reactions and identifying mispriced assets. Behavioral finance courses or books like Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman are great starting points.

3. Industry-Specific Knowledge

  • If you cover specific sectors, consider courses tailored to those industries. For example:
    • Healthcare: Learn about drug pipelines, FDA approval processes, or healthcare reimbursement systems.
    • Tech: Dive into SaaS metrics, ARR (Annual Recurring Revenue), and other KPIs.
    • Energy: Study commodity pricing, reserve valuation, or renewable energy trends.

4. Data Analytics and Visualization

  • Tools like Python, R, or Tableau can help you analyze large datasets, backtest investment strategies, or create compelling visualizations for your investment theses. Data analytics is becoming increasingly valuable in equity research.

5. ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) Analysis

  • ESG investing is a growing trend, and understanding how to evaluate companies on these criteria can set you apart. Look for ESG-focused courses or certifications.

6. Corporate Strategy and Competitive Analysis

  • Deepen your understanding of how companies create and sustain competitive advantages. Resources like Michael Porter’s Competitive Strategy or courses on strategic frameworks can be invaluable.

7. Options and Derivatives

  • While not always central to long-only equity analysis, understanding options and derivatives can help you assess hedging strategies or evaluate companies with significant exposure to these instruments.

8. Advanced Accounting Topics

  • If you're already solid in general accounting, consider diving into:
    • Lease accounting (ASC 842/IFRS 16)
    • Pension accounting
    • Deferred taxes and tax strategies

9. Soft Skills: Communication and Writing

  • As a buyside analyst, your ability to communicate your investment ideas clearly and persuasively is critical. Courses on business writing, storytelling, or even public speaking can be surprisingly impactful.

10. Macroeconomics and Global Markets

  • A deeper understanding of macroeconomic indicators, monetary policy, and global market trends can help you contextualize your stock picks within the broader economic environment.

Suggested Resources:

  • WSO Academy: Check out their advanced industry-specific courses like the Private Equity Master Package or Venture Capital Master Package for niche insights.
  • CFA Institute: Their continuing education resources often include niche topics like ESG or forensic accounting.
  • Books: Consider titles like Financial Shenanigans by Howard Schilit for forensic accounting or The Little Book of Behavioral Investing by James Montier.

By focusing on these areas, you'll not only broaden your skill set but also enhance your ability to generate unique insights and add value to your team.
