Wealth Management -> Asset Management

Hi all!

I am a recent college graduate who is looking to move into asset management from wealth management. My current role is as a client associate, but I find it under stimulating and would like to do something more analytical. I don’t have a solid understanding of asset management, but it seems like a reasonable move. Does anyone have any tips on how to make a career switch?

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some tips to transition from wealth management to asset management:

  1. Leverage Your Current Experience:

    • Highlight your experience in mutual fund/ETF research and asset allocation.
    • Emphasize your client-facing skills and understanding of financial products.
  2. Enhance Your Analytical Skills:

    • Consider taking courses in financial modeling and valuation.
    • Engage in online coursework like "Invest Like the Street" or "Breaking Into Wall Street" for detailed financial modeling and analysis.
  3. Pursue Relevant Certifications:

    • Enroll in the CFA program to gain a deeper understanding of investment management and analysis.
  4. Network Actively:

    • Attend industry webinars and networking events, even if they are virtual.
    • Connect with professionals in asset management through LinkedIn and industry forums.
  5. Tailor Your Resume and Pitch:

    • Rewrite your resume to highlight relevant skills and experiences.
    • Practice your pitch to articulate your career goals and why you are interested in asset management.
  6. Seek Internships or Entry-Level Positions:

    • Apply for internships or entry-level roles in asset management firms to gain direct experience.
  7. Utilize Career Resources:

    • Explore resources like the WSO Company Database, resume reviews, and mock interviews to prepare for job applications and interviews.

By following these steps, you can effectively transition from wealth management to asset management and pursue a more analytical role.
