What does a CLO analyst actually do?

can someone tell me what a clo analyst does (on the buy side at an AM) and if it has similar to credit financial analysis / modelling? Would be great to also hear from a CLO analyst

Here are parts of the role:

monitoring/reconciliation of compliance testing/preparation of hypothetical test scenarios/ Helping in the monthly reporting process; including updating models, liaising with trustee on data/cash reconciliations and agreeing reports for release to investors/ Working with internal groups such as Fund Accounting, Trade Support and Data Management throughout monitoring and reporting process to ensure accurate/timely deliverable/ Understanding the CLO documents and outlining necessary compliance parameters/ Testing internal compliance models for new/refinanced CLO transactions/ Working with internal IT teams to develop improved processes and efficiency gains/ Ad hoc research and data requests

This seems like a portfolio analyst role more than an actual CLO analyst, your just helping to manage the portfolio based on your mandate.

would you say this role would help build financial analysis skills in terms of credit or am I better off at a rating agency/ investment roles? I assumed there would be credit analysis here. And in your opinion what would be the better option here?

What would actual CLO work involve?

This sounds like more of a back-office role that is more focused on CLO compliance type of support rather than investing.

A typical buy-side CLO analyst role is no different than any other credit investing role in terms of the analysis that goes into an investment. The only difference is because of the structure and amount of compliance hurdles of a CLO, you typically are covering a lot more credits and are not as deep in names vs. someone from a distressed shop or hedge fund
