Accenture Strategy Consulting in the UK - Good Place to Start?

Hi all,

I have a graduate offer for a consulting role at Accenture in London. It is specifically in the Strategy team (so not management consulting) - I had to interview further to be placed here.

I know Accenture Strategy is viewed as closer to other T2 consulting firms than the rest of Accenture in the US, but not sure on its reputation in the UK and would love any insight into this. Is it possible for me to join and then move to maybe a better consulting firm later down the line? I am worried it is not recognised as real strategy work by other firms. Also pay is less than I expected.

As an econ Oxbridge grad with a 1st, I am just worried about starting at a company that may limit my future development. The culture at Accenture seems nice, but if its reputation within consulting is poor than I may consider forgoing the offer and doing a masters next year instead, spending the time in between on a credit analyst internship at a bank. I am not generally dead-set on consulting so if Accenture is not a good place to start my career, I would probably prefer not to enter the industry at this point in time.

Just looking for some advice on whether to take this offer. Thanks so much for any help.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding your concerns about starting at Accenture Strategy in the UK:

Reputation and Career Progression:

  • Reputation in the UK: Accenture Strategy is generally viewed as closer to other Tier 2 consulting firms. While it may not have the same prestige as MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain), it is still respected and recognized for its strategic work.
  • Lateral Moves: Moving to a better consulting firm later is possible but challenging, especially at the analyst level. Most common lateral moves are seen at higher levels, such as Strategy Managers moving to MBB.
  • Exit Opportunities: Typical exit opportunities for Accenture Strategy Analysts include strategy and corporate finance roles at Fortune 500 clients. These roles can be within various groups, including corporate development.

Compensation:

  • Pay Concerns: The pay at Accenture Strategy might be less than expected. However, it is competitive within the Tier 2 consulting firms. The ranges for base salaries and bonuses can vary, but they are generally aligned with industry standards for similar roles.

Culture and Development:

  • Culture: The culture at Accenture is often described as positive, with a focus on collaboration and professional development. The Accenture Development Programs and opportunities for international transfers can provide significant growth and learning experiences.
  • Future Development: Starting at Accenture Strategy will not limit your future development. The skills and network you build can be valuable assets for your career, whether you stay in consulting or move to another industry.

Decision Factors:

  • Alternative Path: If you are not dead-set on consulting and have other opportunities, such as a credit analyst internship and a potential master's degree, weigh these options carefully. Consider what aligns best with your long-term career goals and interests.

Conclusion:

  • Taking the Offer: If you are interested in consulting and value the culture and development opportunities at Accenture, it can be a good place to start your career. However, if you have strong reservations about the pay and reputation, and have viable alternatives, it might be worth considering those options.
