Accenture Summer Internship Reference & Background Check

So I accepted my offer for Accenture in Cali for a summer internship and the contract says the offer is contingent upon passing a reference and background check including all information provided in my Candidate Profile.

Does anybody know when/how this happens? I never listed any references anywhere and I'm wondering if I need to be contacting previous employers. Is this mostly for criminal/educational information or do they run serious past-employment checks for internship positions?

Accenture Employment Verification

Background checks are standard for most internship positions. While hopeful candidates tend to get themselves worked up over the process, it's really quite simple as long as there is nothing truly shady in your history, or unless you lied somewhere in the application process.

Mike Palumbo gets into bacground checks in the video below.

Background checks typically include two parts:

  • Calling References: They will call previous employers, professors, high schools. They will confirm dates of attendance, salary, performance, etc.
  • Background Check: Here they look into your financial and criminal history. They are checking to see if you’ve ever filed for bankruptcy, or been convicted on a felony. They are not concerned with your parking tickets or other aspects of your personal finances.

My experience (not with Accenture) did not have any "references" checked (I was never asked for and never gave any in the first place)

Mine went through a criminal background check, education information check, and in-depth past employment verification.

Can you be more specific about the in-depth past employment verification? Only one of my positions listed on my resume was considered to be a real position (with contract and salary, etc.). Some involve me doing work for startups which was never contracted or paid.
