Advice on doing MBB/T2 recruiting "correctly"

Hi everyone,

I'm a current junior at a university that's somewhere between a mid semi-target and low target. I decided to try for consulting fairly late last year, so I missed internship deadlines for most top firms. I did end up cold applying to MBB just to see what happened, and did better than I expected — one first round and one final round after like 2 weeks of case grinding (nothing for McKinsey but I fucked up Solve so incredibly that it wasn't a surprise).  I think I was probably carried by my academic stats ; right now I have a 3.9high and 1550+ SAT. The rest of my resume was fairly unremarkable, but it should be a little better this year since I have an internship lined up which is much more prestigious than last summer's.

What I want to know is what I should be doing between now and July to maximize my chance of an offer - I feel super out of the loop on what the recruiting process entails. Should I just be networking/reaching out to contacts at these firms, and maybe casing, or is there anything else I'm missing?

Also:

-does my performance on the internship interviews last year, especially for the firm where I made the final round,  have any bearing on whether I get interviews this year, or do they not care?

-does McKinsey really keep your Solve score for a year? I legit messed up the ecology game so badly (misread directions) that I think it would probably tank my application again lol

Thanks

To maximize your chances of securing an MBB or T2 offer, here's a structured approach based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Networking: Build and Leverage Relationships

  • Start Early: Networking is critical. Every interaction with the firm is assessed, so aim to make a positive impression. Reach out to consultants, alumni, or anyone connected to the firms you're targeting.
  • Diverse Interactions: Attend events like firm presentations, office hours, case competitions, and dinners. Even informal interactions like emails or phone calls can leave a lasting impression.
  • Consistency Matters: Maintain regular contact with your network. This shows genuine interest and keeps you on their radar.

2. Case Prep: Quality Over Quantity

  • Structured Practice: Dedicate time to mastering case interviews. Focus on frameworks, problem-solving, and clear communication. Two weeks of grinding helped you before, but consistent practice over months will make a significant difference.
  • Mock Interviews: Practice with peers or professionals. Feedback is invaluable for refining your approach.
  • Fit Interviews: Don’t neglect behavioral questions. Practice articulating your story, achievements, and why consulting aligns with your goals.

3. Resume and Cover Letter: Highlight Impact

  • Update Your Resume: Emphasize your new internship and any measurable achievements. Highlight transferable consulting skills like leadership, analytics, and teamwork.
  • Tailor Your Application: Customize your cover letter for each firm, showcasing your fit and enthusiasm.

4. McKinsey Solve and Other Tests

  • Address Past Mistakes: If McKinsey retains Solve scores for a year, focus on acing it this time. Practice similar online games or tests to improve your performance.
  • Broader Preparation: Other firms may have their own assessments, so familiarize yourself with their formats.

5. Leverage Past Performance

  • Final Round Advantage: Your prior performance, especially reaching a final round, could work in your favor. It demonstrates potential, but firms will still evaluate you afresh. Use this as motivation to improve further.

6. Timeline Awareness

  • Prepare for Early Deadlines: MBB firms may move deadlines earlier, so be ready by July. Ensure your casing skills and applications are polished well in advance.

7. Additional Tips

  • Join Consulting Clubs: If your school has one, participate actively. If not, consider starting one to build a network and gain access to resources.
  • Stay Informed: Keep an eye on recruiting trends and deadlines. Firms may adjust their processes, so stay flexible.

By focusing on these areas, you'll significantly improve your chances of landing an offer. Good luck, and remember, preparation and persistence are key!
