already have a masters - mba or not?
yo,
associate at mbb namr with a non-mba masters, think business analytics. Firm is willing to sponsor my mba, but i’m not sure if that’s the appropriate next move considering the opportunity cost.
Only factor keeping me moderately interested is prestige, since my undergrad was pretty non-target and my graduate was semi-target at best. If i were to apply, i would only consider yale/hbs/gsb/sloan, and then euro-wise saïd/hsg/judge/insead/hec
Would not want to pivot out of consulting. Happy where I am but open to ib assuming it’s in an industry i am interested in. Many do it for “maturity” reasons, but i’m not in that boat.
For those with grad degrees who ended up doing/not doing mbas, what were your motivations? And was it worth it if you did?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your situation presents a nuanced decision. Here are some key considerations to help you evaluate whether pursuing an MBA is the right move:
1. Opportunity Cost vs. Value
2. Prestige and Branding
3. Networking and Optionality
4. Industry-Specific Considerations
5. Maturity and Personal Growth
6. Alternatives
Final Thoughts
If prestige and branding are your primary motivators, and you're targeting top-tier programs, the MBA could be worth it—especially with your firm's sponsorship. However, if you're content in consulting and don't see a clear need for the degree to achieve your goals, it might be better to focus on excelling in your current role and leveraging your existing master's degree.
Ultimately, the decision hinges on your long-term aspirations and whether the MBA aligns with them. If you're still uncertain, consider speaking with colleagues or alumni who have pursued similar paths to gain additional insights.
