Based on the most helpful WSO content, Alvarez & Marsal's technical assessments, particularly for restructuring roles, often include a numeracy test, Excel test, and a case study focused on restructuring and insolvency. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Numeracy Test:

    • Expect questions that test your ability to handle numbers quickly and accurately.
    • Practice mental math and basic arithmetic to improve speed and accuracy.
    • Resources like the WSO Elite Modeling Package or other financial modeling templates can help sharpen your skills.
  2. Excel Test:

    • Be prepared to demonstrate proficiency in financial modeling, including tasks like building or analyzing financial statements, DCF, M&A, LBO, and Comps.
    • Familiarize yourself with advanced Excel formulas, shortcuts, and best practices. WSO offers resources like Excel Modeling Best Practices and Advanced Excel Formulas to help you prepare.
  3. Restructuring and Insolvency Case Study:

    • This will likely involve analyzing a distressed company's financials and proposing solutions to improve its financial stability.
    • Focus on understanding key restructuring concepts, such as debt restructuring, operational turnaround strategies, and liquidation scenarios.
    • Practice with case studies or templates available in the WSO Elite Modeling Package to get a feel for the type of analysis required.

To excel, dedicate time to practicing financial modeling and case studies. If you need additional resources, WSO's financial modeling courses and templates are highly recommended. Good luck!

Did it last year for the same department at grad level - would be interested to hear if it has changed at all if that's where you are. Mine was excel test, pretty easy and focused on making a pivot table and interpreting a DCF, numerical was easy, similar to those you complete for other consulting firms, and the case study was relatively simple, just looking at financials and reading context, preparing recommendations etc

Wouldn't surprise me if they give you a messy dataset to work with, but sounds relevant. Maths was really not hard, GCSE level, just read the Q carefully. From what I remember case study was find recommendations on both, can't remember detail I'm afraid

Yeah, please do let me know - encouraging a sibling to apply next year. Best of luck - when is it?
