Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about preparing for an interview process similar to Alvarez & Marsal's Restructuring Group Summer Analyst position:

Interview Process Overview:

  1. Resume Drop: Initial submission of your resume.
  2. Assessment: This typically includes an Excel test with some short answer questions.
  3. First Round: Usually a case interview.
  4. Super Day (SD): Consists of three interviews:
    • Two case interviews.
    • One product-focused interview.

Excel Assessment Preparation:

  • Excel Skills: Focus on improving your proficiency in Excel, as the assessment will likely test your ability to handle data and perform calculations efficiently.
  • Short Answer Questions: Be prepared to answer questions that test your understanding of financial concepts and your ability to apply them practically.

Case Interviews:

  • Quantitative Focus: Expect a heavier quantitative focus in the case interviews, similar to MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) but with more emphasis on numbers.
  • Brainstorming: For the product-focused interview, you might be given a household item and asked to brainstorm ways to improve it. Be ready to think on your feet and provide innovative solutions.

General Tips:

  • Practice Case Studies: Scour the internet for case studies and advice. Websites like Victor Cheng's site and case books on simplythecase can be very helpful.
  • Mock Interviews: If possible, practice with friends or mentors who have experience with case interviews.
  • Frameworks: Read up on different frameworks and practice applying them to various scenarios.

By focusing on these areas, you can better prepare for the interview process and excel in the Excel assessment and case interviews. Good luck!

Which office is it?

As a summer analyst the bar in terms of technical skills might be set lower. But you will typically be assess on your logical/business reasoning in some atypical consulting case studies - this could be a guestimate or just being asked to draw up the IS and BS for a producing company using your own assumptions.

Things to always prep for:

Financial modelling: 3SM, structuring a workbook, keeping it nice and tidy and easy to follow, you are unlike to be asked to perform a LBO, DCF, STCF or debt capacity model at your level.

Remember that cultural fit is a bit thing at A&M and that you will likely have 3-4 rounds (depending on the office) with mix of personal and tech interviews and during this time it will be 1-2 persons in the interviews. So you will most likely meet around 6-8 ppl from the team.

Good luck and feel free to PM if you have any other questions

thanks sm for the info! its for the atlanta office. do you happen to know what the excel assessment in the second round would look like? is it just the 3sm like you mentioned? i actually didn’t even apply to restructuring but somehow got an interview so i’m not really familiar with banking technicals
