A&M internship office advice

Hey All,

Rising Sophomore at a non target state school interested in Restructuring Consulting specifically at A&M. The office in my state has a pretty good pipeline to my college and I'm going to plan on recruiting there for the Internship after my Junior year but I was also thinking of applying to the London office as I'm originally from the UK (Cambridge area). Does anyone know of the internship/hiring process in the London office specifically? Is it a good idea to apply for both? I'd be incredibly fortunate to get either but I don't want it to impact my chances if they feel like they're competing for an intern. I know they're a little bit iffy on that but just wanted to see if anyone had any additional knowledge.

Thanks

Based on insights from WSO discussions, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Applying to Multiple Offices: It's generally acceptable to apply to multiple offices, especially if you have a strong connection to both locations (e.g., your state school pipeline and being originally from the UK). However, some firms, including Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), may prefer candidates to demonstrate a clear preference for one location to avoid the perception of indecision or lack of commitment. If you decide to apply to both, ensure you tailor your applications to highlight why you are a strong fit for each specific office.

  2. London Office Insights: The London office of A&M is known for its work in Private Equity Performance Improvement (PEPI) and Corporate Transformation Services (CTS), as well as Restructuring. The hiring process in London may place a stronger emphasis on technical skills and relevant experience compared to some U.S. offices. Networking with professionals in the London office and understanding their specific needs can give you an edge.

  3. Impact on Chances: Applying to both offices is unlikely to harm your chances if you handle it strategically. Be transparent about your reasons for applying to both locations if asked, and emphasize your genuine interest in the firm as a whole. However, if you sense hesitation from recruiters about dual applications, it might be wise to prioritize the office where you have the strongest connections or the best chance of success.

  4. Networking: Whether you apply to one or both offices, networking is crucial. Reach out to alumni or professionals at A&M in both locations to gain insights into their hiring processes and culture. This can also help you gauge which office might be a better fit for your career goals.

In summary, applying to both offices is feasible, but you should approach it with a clear strategy and strong, tailored applications. Networking and demonstrating a genuine interest in A&M’s work will be key to standing out.

Hi illitquidity,

When I applied to A&M Rx a few months ago, the application asked me to rank my preferred office locations. From what I’ve seen, each office in the US tends to hire independently, and no one I spoke to at the firm had any concerns about listing multiple locations on the application. Also, keep in mind that A&M Rx in the US follows the IB recruiting timeline, which is about 1.5 years in advance (applications for summer 2026 closed in January 2025).

I believe the UK process happens later, which could actually work in your favor if you were planning on using it as a backup, in case your original plan of working in the US doesn’t work out.
