Anyone else feeling hella elitist on the other side?

Grabbed my top MBB internship offer for next summer and just feeling hella elitist recently, anyone else? Worked at a T2 consulting firm last summer in Chicago and starting to really see the difference..

you are literally a cog in a corporate machine. you could drop dead tomorrow and no one would care; you would be replaced by the end of the day. grow up

Just wait until you get divked around by clients who don’t respect you for a second

You started to notice the difference...as an intern? You need to understand that as an intern, you are actively a negative to your team (regardless of how much they say they enjoyed having you). Same with your first ~3 months full-time.

I sincerely doubt you have any perspective of value or legitimacy at this point. I'm actually really curious what differences you think you're seeing?

There is an agreed upon philosophy that states that people in general derive value from eight faucets. These eight faucets have been redefined, or stratified countless times in other forms.

Those eight faucets are:

  • Mental Health
  • Finance/Financial Wellbeing
  • Physical Life/Physical Health
  • Relationships (Family, Friends, Colleagues, Mentors)
  • Value & Purpose /Religion/Spiritual Wellbeing
  • Career & Work
  • Education & Skill Development
  • Adventure & Creativity

When you overstate the significance of one, it's because you've either consciously or unconsciously valued it in your mind. Right now, you're feeling a great sense of pride and self-adoration for placing in a great firm, as you should, it's a huge feat, but don't let that overshadow the rest of you.

I was asked once what I am. Outside of my career, materialistic possessions, outside of my hobbies and the various ways I've identified myself or my value. The answer: I am the culmination of my thoughts and choices. If you maintain an elitist mindset believing yourself superior given your position, the minute you lose it, you lose your sense of value or your method of identifying you.

Just my two cents from someone who has consistently clawed up and fell down.

wdym by this? as in the level of colleagues you work with are different or the feeling of prestige is different

Hard pass on this one, though if he said MBB and not McKinsey given the content of his post he has to be at B or B

I don't know why so many users here on this thread, besides FinnesseGod, are so quick to jump to assumptions about your intentions. I don't agree with your sentiment by any means and how you said it, but I don't think it's helpful for others to be so negative and show hatred toward you for what could just be an honest mistake/misunderstanding.

Being proud and thankful for your accomplishments is one thing (congrats on your internship offer), but feeling elitist is unwise and will not do you well down the line. I'm sure you have a lot of appreciable traits and skills, and it would be a shame if your friends and peers may overlook that because of your outright sense of elitism deriving from your career position. It's understandable to feel elite if you or your family don't come from that background/you were never taught to handle these situations, and it's more of a lack of social cues than intentional ignorance. In that case, it's just a matter of a healthy conversation between WSO users on here and you to discuss how you can improve that mentality. However, if it is pure ignorance, and you're not willing to reconsider what you said then I would strongly recommend you keep these thoughts to yourself as much as possible, especially in the office.

Best of luck on your internship!
