Q&A: Big 4 Audit to Strategy Consulting
Hi Everyone, I'm currently a management consulting within the strategy arm of a T2 firm that transitioned previously from audit. I am posting here to see if there is any questions people may have in terms of how I made the transition that I may be able to answer or any other business related questions.
I've received a lot of help from this forum so just looking to give back a little and also introduce myself.

Hi Frank-Li, thank you for doing this. I have a few questions:
1) How did you network in order to make the jump from audit to strategy? Cold emailing, LinkedIn messaging, networking internally at your firm, or something else?
2) I'm sure you faced a lot of criticism that your background did not align with strategy, how did you overcome these objections and gain referrals for interviews / prove you were capable in interviews?
3) How did you prepare for case interviews? I know the most common ways are via Crafting Cases, Case In Point, etc. but what in particular helped you the most?

Hi! No worries, happy to help:
1) I tried a little bit of everything until I gained traction with an individual who was willing to and had some power to help with the transition. I networked both internally at my firm along with externally through LinkedIn and through family/friends. I made a lot of networking mistakes along the way but it also helped me to learn to become a better sourer/networker in general.
2) Yes that was certainly the case and I got told by a lot of individuals to just go the MBA route (which I felt was a very generic answer). How i overcame it was spinning the experiences I had into a narrative on why I would be a good fit and what tasks I had performed which aligned with an overall strategy engagement. Audit is essentially a "data validation" task, which is still at least 50% of the workload for performing data analysis. If the data is crap, your analysis is crap. So there are essential components of audit that were transferrable which I tried to highlight as part of my resume and interviews.
3) Yes those are good resources. Rocketblocks and preplounge was also helpful. I found it took some time to get ramped up on cases and was one of the main hurdles during the transitioning process.

Hey Frank-Li, I know this is from a long time ago. It's awesome that you created this post. I've been trying to find those on LinkedIn who have made the move, and I have also noted that most people have gone the MBA path - this isn't really an option for me right now. I'm wondering: 1) What grade did you leave Audit? 2) I've read through your reply below re the skills you honed in on in your application/interview. Are you able to share any other examples of the skills that you believe to be the most transferrable? 3) Are you still in Strategy Consulting now, and if so, are you glad you made the move? 4) If you don't mind me asking, what level was the individual who helped you make the transition that you mentioned you gained traction with?
