Capital One vs KPMG Consulting vs Boutique Consulting

Hi everyone!

I am currently a junior have final rounds coming up for summer positions. I wanted to gauge which summer opportunity would be best for recruiting for MBB next year.

The opportunities are Capital One (Business Analyst), a boutique consulting firm in NYC specializing in pharmaceuticals, and KPMG Consulting. For KPMG, it will most likely be risk consulting but could possibly be strategy. Additionally, the KPMG position is international (East Asia). Please let me know if any other info is needed to make the best decision. Thank you in advance!

That's true. I just wanted to have an idea of what to do in case I received multiple offers (not assuming that will be the case). Any thoughts?

KPMG strategy would be #1. Capital One is a close second, but know that it's like a cult over there and living in Virginia (on their campus) really sucks.

Yeah, Capital One BA program is highly analytical, very competitive and has excellent exit opps. I got to super day there (didn't get offer). Had to compete with Wharton MBAs and with other targets. The case was the hardest I've ever seen.

I'm assuming the program is just as competitive at the undergrad level. But, as I've noted, the quality of life isn't great and the company has a cultish culture (based on everything I've heard).

My best friend from college worked at a boutique consulting firm focused on pharm, based out of nyc, for 2 years. He always complained of excessive work load (work on weekends too) for not so great pay, with most of projects being implementation projects. He kept lamenting that he was working banker hours for half the pay. it may be the same firm that ur interviewing at i dunno. This friend is really smart and very good at case interviews. He kept applying to other jobs all the time and he eventually got an offer at MBB consulting and bounced recently. Pretty impressive feat, considering he never did mba.

Another close friend of mine works at E&Y consulting in nyc. Dunno exactly what line of consulting he works in, but he really hates it. He told me he does internal audit work most of times, which is weird considering that the dude got an engineering degee from an ivy.

I'd pick Cap One offer. I heard really good things about it from many. If you end up at lower tier consulting, it's still not the end of the world. If ur good, you could lateral out to better firms, or just do mba later. Best of luck man!!
