Comprehensive Recruiting Plan with Timeline

I'm a rising junior at a target hoping to recruit for a management consulting internship. I thought I'd include my plan below so that (a) anyone with information might offer suggestions (b) it might be helpful for others.

Application List: MBB, Deloitte S&O, PwC Strategy&, Oliver Wymann, Accenture, A.T. Kearney, Booz Allen Hamilton, Ernst & Young, Accenture, KPMG LLP, IBM Global Services

Part 1: Networking

  1. I have friends at MBB and PwC that I plan to reach out to for (a) resume help (b) case practice (c) a referral over the summer (May-August).

  2. Show up to OCR events at the beginning of the year for all firms and try to get to know 1-2 people at each firm (where I don't already know people) well (September-October).

Note: I've heard that cold-emailing alumni is not effective as a means of getting (a)-(c), so I've decided for now not to cold-email at the places where I don't have contacts. Let me know if you think this is a mistake and have some reasoning.

Part 2: PST / BCG Potential Test

  1. Learn the (I think) 6 question types and common strategies for them (May-August).

  2. Practice all of the online tests (August-September).

Part 3: Fit interview

  1. Draft 3 good stories for each of the four broad "character traits" (leading a team, managing a conflict, convincing others you're right, taking personal initiative to do something with impact)

  2. Draft responses to Why Consulting/Why Firm/Why Office

  3. Get the answers to these questions checked over

  4. Practice delivering the answers out-loud

  5. Scour the internet for other common but less common questions and draft answers to those

Part 4: Case interview

  1. Learn the market sizing tricks and practice 1-5 of these questions each day

  2. Read Case in Point and Case Secrets

  3. Develop ~4 frameworks that work best for me and get them down

  4. Practice cases alone, with other applicants, and hopefully with a few friends at the above firms

Part 5: General

  1. Starting over the summer, reading the Economist cover-to-cover (previously, I picked out articles I was interested in only)

Is there anything I'm missing or are there any changes you would suggest? Thanks!

Just a heads up, Oliver Wyman is finishing up their internship recruiting in July for my school. Also check to make sure you actually have to take the online tests—some firms have moved away from them for OCR candidates.

Lastly, imagine meeting hundreds of students in one night, and then receiving dozens of emails requesting resume help, case practice, or whatever. Networking last minute before the application closes is more than likely not going to benefit you at all in the short term. You should still go and meet people so that you can reach out to them over the course of the next year before recruiting full-time.
