Computers @ MBB

Hi Monkeys,

Do I need to buy a new laptop?

The happs: -An act of God took mine away this week. No negligence on my part, but it's gone. -I am starting at MBB end of next summer. I know they will issue me a work computer. -I am already out of school and don't have a job that requires a laptop. -I am moving home in a couple of days and will have access to and old, slow desktop that will do the trick until I start my new job. -I am broke and in debt and will be buying a car soon too, so I don't really want to buy a new computer.

Do those of you who have two computers (work / personal) wish you just had one? When you travel, do you bring both laptops? I assume not...

Perspective from those in The Know (tm) appreciated.

Yours truly, Persimmon

You should apply to get one of google's new chrome laptops. They're free.

I used my desktop from 2002 until this summer. Replaced it with another desktop (it was like $600, and I had almost $450 from gift card that I collected from my firm of all places). Only thing I use it for is to store my mp3 and stream netflix to my TV (got a HDMI output). It's nice to have, but I won't die without it.

But yeah, unless you plan to seriously download mp3 or porn (or any other bit torrent stuff), use what you have. If you really want to go buy one, buy a mid end desktop that will last 4-5 years. You don't want two laptops, especially if you never move one (carrying 20 lbs of laptop in your shoulder bag is retarded).

If you want to carry some personal stuff with you all the time, buy a portable harddrive. It's also a good way to back up your work stuff when the laptop eventually dies out of nowhere.

I use my personal laptop exclusively from Thursday night-Sunday night...it doesn't come with me when I travel. If it died, I wouldn't exactly rush to replace it...

persimmonThanks for the responses so far.

I can't bring the old desktop, and I think, ideally, if I can wait it out until I start, I'd like to just use my work laptop for personal use, too.

You can't just clear your browser history when you're done? Has anyone here actually heard of anyone else getting in trouble for looking at legal (albeit not work appropriate) websites on their work computers during non-work hours?
