Decision between 2 Summer Internships
I am a sophomore at a target with a 3.6 studying Econ and interested in m consulting (maybe finance). Ive gotten two internships lined up for this summer already.
The 1st) I would be the only intern at a small litigation consulting firm in downtown Chicago.
And the 2nd) I would be one of about ten interns at a large executive search firm (headhunting) in downtown Chicago.
To clarify, I don't have tunnel vision on m consulting or finance, so just because the first one is consulting doesn't mean I'd prefer it. I'd rather pick the one that is more interesting and provides better skills.
There's still time to network and cold call for PWM or a boutique firm related to an industry that you're interested in. Oil/Gas, Agriculture, healthcare, etc. Since you go to a target (I'm assuming an ivy or other top 20 private; the other targets are a bit different) you will no doubt have a great alum list working in various startups, or other small businesses that will give you good work. TBH I would try to get something else, both of your options seem like they wouldn't provide you with much benefit in terms of a learning experience.
Make sure you're not going to be an office dog at the first internship (i.e. fetching coffee, dry cleaning, etc.). Firms that hire a small number of interns can be a blessing or a curse: some make interns do menial office tasks, others let the interns take on significant responsibilities.
Headhunting is a very specific type of consulting (i.e. human capital, people & change, etc.). It's unlikely that that experience in headhunting would translate well into financial/strategy/management consulting. The "consulting" experience and skills will transfer, but the knowledge won't be as relevant.
If I was in your position, I would go with the first internship, assuming you won't be doing menial office work. If you actually have a chance to get involved with the work, then it'll be more relevant (legal knowledge is always relevant, no matter what industry you're in).
