Deloitte Human Capital Exit Opportunities
Will be starting at Deloitte in their federal human capital practice in the summer as an analyst. I am excited about starting work there but I am not interested in doing HR work or going into federal (what people commonly say are the exit opportunities without going to business school after 3-4 years at Deloitte) after like 2 years at Deloitte - how hard is it to switch industry after Deloitte human capital after two years? Is it true you're stuck with HR or federal unless you go to business school (and have to work 3-4 years before applying to business school)? Thanks!
The few people I've met who did this cycled between HR/recruiting. You could probably get into a top mba program though to switch over to strategic consulting. Really it's up to you to figure out what you want to do ultimately.
Why did you take the job if you aren't interested in HR OR Federal work?
It will be very difficult to switch industries. Look at it from the POV of a potential employer: Why would they want to hire a HR/Federal guy for their unrelated industry? Shouldn't they just hire someone with your stats/experience level from a company in a related industry? You'll have to hustle and have a bit of luck in your network to make this happen without an advanced degree to reset yourself.
Federal really boxes you in... most people I know who leave big 4/Accenture/BAH federal just cycle between the firms but stay in federal. Sometimes they'll go to another firm like Leidos, Northrup Grumman, or Boeing.
One of my friends works in Big 4 federal FT and came to the job with the hopes of transitioning to the commercial side. Because federal projects limit the amount of hours you work and have bigger teams, 1 year of experience on the federal team = .5 years of experience on the commercial side, so he ended up staying in federal for a few years. Once he finally got a commercial project, he burnt out very quickly because he was used to the slower working pace on the federal side and promised himself to never do a commercial project again.
Tl;DR: It's very difficult to transition between the two sides, even internally. If you have Deloitte lined up for this summer, use it to its full advantage and get a nice name on your resume, but look elsewhere for FT. As other posters have said, this experience will pigeon-hole you.
