Difference between corporate consulting vs corporate strategy vs normal consulting/strategy vs corporate development

Dear WSO members,

My questions are: 1. corporate consulting vs corporate strategy vs normal consulting/strategy vs corporate development 2. What is business development (maybe with reference to Big 4 as I know about some of their departments theory wise) 3. How different is Business Development(BD) compared to Consulting/Advisory or Risk ( Are these subset of business development?) 4. Are BD Front Office ? 5. Which of these below are FO ? Risk vs Consulting differences (which one has better pay and more promotions) ?

For example, these are taken from Deloitte website:

Audit & Assurance: Business Advisory Services

Consulting: Human Capital Strategy & Operations Technology

Financial Advisory: Mergers & Acquisitions Financial Crisis

Risk Advisory: Strategic & Reputation Risk Regulatory Risk Financial Risk Operational Risk Cyber Risk

Tax: Global Business Tax Indirect Tax Global Employer Services

Thank you very much. Cheers.

I’ll take a crack

  1. First 3 are the same thing. Corporate development is different.
  2. Sales.
  3. Sales is a business function. The higher your rank, the more time you spend selling or helping others sell.
  4. See 2,3.
  5. N/A. Hypothetically all are “front office”, but your analogy to finance does not really fit consulting. In consulting companies, most people are expected to deal with clients directly at least some of the time (CONSULTING!). “Back office” is like HR, accounting, etc, and some of the internal R&D stuff.
