Do people make the switch to consulting from Sales and Trading?
There's often stories floating around of people looking to do, or having done, the move from finance to consulting. But it always seems to be from IBD. It's understandable that this would be more common due to more relevant transferable skills, but I never seem to see any stories about people switching from S&T. Does it happen? If not, why? And if yes, am I actually just missing the stories?
Many university students who gravitate towards S&T or finance in general tend to have characteristics that would be well suited for consulting, at least at the undergrad level. These two industries are very popular choices among undergrads doing Economics or other degrees of this nature. You'd think that this switch from S&T would therefore be more popular, at least among junior ranks.
I went from Sales & Trading to consulting. However, it was from a junior BB S&T SA offer to consulting FT offer. In my experience, it does happen and being in S&T doesn't hinder you vs. IBD. You probably hear more stories since there are simply more IBD kids, therefore, if they switch, they were probably in IBD.
From an internship to FT you can always transition. From FT S&T to consulting is like going from the NHL to the NFL, they are completely different jobs. I know someone who transitioned after 1.5yrs in S&T but they started over as a first year with the incoming recent consulting grads.

I'm currently a 2nd year analyst in S&T at a BB and have decided I'm not interested in making a career out of it. I am currently looking to transition into management consulting, but like finance it seems the recruitment classes are fairly structured at the major firms (MBB, Deloitte S&O, etc). I understand I will likely have to start over as an analyst and am fine with that. My question is whether or not there are usually Jan/Feb start-date analyst classes that would still be open for interviews or if there are any smaller consulting firms that are more open to off-cycle hiring. Any/all input or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, I can't really be of help for your issue, although certainly others on here can. But, do you think you'd be willing to talk for a minute about your experience thus far in S&T? Why are you leaving?
What about grinding it out for a year or two more and then getting an MBA to transition? You could spin it well in your essays wanting to transition from S&T to a cap markets consulting role.
Shoot me a PM to chat about S&T specifically, but don't want to focus on that in this thread. As for grinding it out, that has been my manta thus far and would prefer not to keep the act up for another year or two. I have thought about doing a year or two of different work (non-profit, microfinance, start-up) type work while preparing for B-school, but still think consulting would be a better venue given there is a chance they sponsor B-school and it would be an opportunity to gain a very different yet similarly rigorous experience pre-MBA. Ultimately trying to figure out if I'm too late to the game to transition into consulting - if that is the case I'll begin more thoroughly preparing my path to MBA.
OP, you can definitely transfer over from finance to consulting. I was actually approached by a couple consulting firms during my 2nd year. Feel free to PM if you have any Q's.

Hi guys, i'm still at university, so this comes after a long period of trying to realize what i really want to do for the rest of my career. I was considering IB, but realized it isn't worth spending 3 years of my life just to get a better exit opp. From the beginning of my university i was also considering trading, but because it has almost none exit option outside banking, i let trading besides. Now, i have an oportunity to get an internship at a BB in trading, but i am not sure if i'll like the job. I'm wondering if it is possible to go through 3 yrs at trading, b-school and then applying to MBB if i don't like trading.
