Doubt regarding Federal Consulting

I am trying to get an idea about how the federal practice goes in terms of Big 4. I had an offer with Deloitte Federal in DC. in my last job, I was severely underpaid. So , when Deloitte offered me , they offered me 80k. I have almost 7 years of experience, but was working for a non-profit, for my H1b(yeah..I know) . Since living in Dc is way expensive, I didn't joined. My market value goes around 100k, and I got a job in my state with 90k. I wish to make a switch to federal consulting down road. The reason been, I was told that federal is almost a 9-5 job, which I enjoy. My question is, how hard it's to get into Deloitte since I already declined their offer once? Also, with the current termoil in DC, what's the future of federal consulting looks like? Will people loose job? is it a wise area to get into? Also, the thing which I observed in my offer letter is that they hired me for that project only. it's weird, and it was written in my offer letter that after end of contract, I will be evaluated and be offered a new position. I have never seen anything like that. Was it normal for Deloitte? I interviewed for Deloitte S&O on AMS service line, same type of offer .Hired only for that project. Is it now a norm in consulting or just Deloitte in general?

Dude why federal consulting? Is it really just because the 9-5 job?

I know several people who have interned/worked at Deloitte federal and you wouldn't believe how much they complain about the federal government. Do you like being able to communicate easily with clients? Throw that out the window - the Government is slow.

My 2 cents - not worth your time and the pay cut.

You're pretty much the same position I was in. Underpaid with 7 years of experience. Unfortunately in my experience in my research, Deloitte offers based on your current salary and won't give you market and they won't negotiate unless you have another offer.

Declining their offer the first time shouldn't really effect what happens the second time as long as you didn't burn any bridges.

Regarding the offer for project only that's really weird,t hat's usually the norm for smaller boutique firms around here where most of their revenue is dependent on one project. and not the bigger firms. A lot of the people that on-boarded with me including myself currently have no project and is on the bench.

I'm going to agree with ProspectusMonkey, it's not worth moving here if you're motivator is just that it could be a 9-5 job.

Thanks for reply .. mind telling when you were on boarded? I am trying to get an idea of federal consulting project. My hr told that the project is fully funded till 2019.

What is it exactly you want to know about Federal consulting?

I just started last week on Deloitte (you can check my post history to see what they offered and my former salary was) but I have worked on federal projects my whole career. Federal projects are very slow and requires lots of documentation and deliverables. Everything that is done requires multiple approvals and if more than one agency is part of the project, be ready to sit on the solution until they can finally make a decision. I have no idea what you're background is but federal tech is generally very old and behind the times.

The exit ops from what I seen is to work for the federal government themselves. Go look at the GS pay rates to see what comp you can get but be aware that a lot of the jobs cap at gs-13/14. Some were able to exit to Product Management at bigger tech companies like Amazon but they leveraged their experience as a Manager or Senior Manager skills at a big consulting firm like a Big 4, Accenture, or IBM.

thanks for reply. I am a consultant on commercial side with 8+ years of exp. I want federal consulting side as I wanna retire as a federal employee myself.
