Economic Consulting Potential Exit Opportunities?
I was recently offered a position to work at a top Econ consulting firm which I am very grateful for. However, I was wondering what the common exit opportunities were for econ consultants.
Specifically, I was wondering if anyone was able to successfully work for 1-2 years and transition into roles into hedge funds, asset management, and/or investment research. Also, what about moving into different firms such as F500 firms? Do ECs frequently move onto data science roles or finance roles there successfully?
Is business school almost an implied "must" if I wanted to transition to a different industry/role? I am personally interested in wanting to work in the investment space (specifically public equities) in general and wanted to see if anyone had experience in this and had any tips/advice they were willing to share!
Much appreciated!
Have seen quite a few people move to data science-type roles in FAANG/big tech
Yep data science / analytics is pretty common w/o higher education especially if you work on coding-heavy cases - just look at the number of ex-econ consultants that work at Facebook or something. Corporate finance (finance cases help) / strategy also possible. Investing positions without getting an MBA is harder unless you first enter an analytics / valuation role or something.
If you're interested in business school, the top companies routinely place into M7 and T10, with some going to HSW (a few of my interviewers and an alumni connection did)
It's highly unlikely to move from Econ Consulting to PE/HF. Just not a great skill/background match (especially compared to other people applying from more directly relevant roles).
If you're interested in PE/HF, best to avoid econ consulting and focus on IB or quant heavy roles for quant finance.
I interned in an EC firm. I knew former coworkers who exited to big tech, IB, and more. I wouldn't worry about being extremely pigeonholed after only a couple years of it
