IB or MBB for the edits?

Hey monkeys, current sophomore at NYU (19m). In a finance org and consulting org, so feeling a bit pulled in each direction.

They both lead to good career opportunities after your first couple of years (obviously with banking being slightly better for PE, and consulting slightly worse for everything else), so trying to find new factors to weigh.

Thinking about coolness/prestige, I keep seeing Wolf of Wall Street, American Psycho, and The Big Short edits on insta. I feel like this creates an electric atmosphere around banking. I don’t really see any cool Patrick Bateman-esque edits about consulting. Is consulting less cool overall?

If you want to be the kind of person deserving of those kinds of edits, you need to take real risks with your life. Starting a company, social media following, building something from scratch. Joining finance/consulting in 2026 as the 100,000th analyst isn't going to get you there - no one who matters gives a shit about you being an analyst at Firm X at the end of the day
