Incoming BCG consultant lottery start date?

ADC offer holder for BCG in the U.S. Just got our start date survey that only offer two dates, one in late summer 2025 and one in early Q1 2026. It’s also a lottery system to get the earlier start date. Just wondering if anyone had ran into this before and what it could mean, is it an indication that the office pipeline is having issues? I asked previous ADCs currently at that office and they never had a lottery system..

Based on previous WSO threads, BCG has implemented delayed start dates in the past, including using a lottery system to determine earlier start dates. For example, in North America, start dates for incoming associates and consultants have been pushed back by 1-4 months in some cases, as noted in a prior discussion. This approach seems to be a way for BCG to manage capacity and align hiring with project demand, especially during periods of economic uncertainty or when the pipeline is adjusting.

The introduction of a lottery system for start dates could indicate that the office is facing challenges in balancing its staffing pipeline, possibly due to slower-than-expected project growth or over-hiring in previous cycles. While this isn't a common practice historically (as confirmed by your conversations with previous ADCs), it has been observed in recent years as firms adapt to fluctuating market conditions.

If you're concerned, it might be worth reaching out to your recruiter for more clarity on the situation and how it might impact your onboarding experience.

The whole consulting industry is having pipeline issues. Everyone is going to defer start dates. I bet some firms will yank offers.

If you have a need to start earlier based on your personal financial situation, you could try reaching out to whoever is heading up recruiting in your office and ask. I've seen that work before. But they usually try to delay As before ADCs, they know grad students are broke... if they're delaying ADCs now things must be bad.

Yeah a big part is needing to start due to financial considerations. I'll reach out to the head recruiting partner then, hope it works. Thanks for the advice!

I've noticed many ADCs from my office across multiple years have either August or January starting dates so I think there could be some office-specific variation, but I too share your concerns. My postdoc contract finishes in August and I'm wondering if I need to start hitting up the temp/contract job market for a few months to make sure I can support my family.

I also emailed the head recruiting person at my office today - hopefully they can give me some helpful suggestions, but we'll see.

EDIT: had to take some info out to prevent potential doxxing, sorry. Happy to discuss further over DMs about the starting date situation
