Internships for MBB undergrad recruiting

I am a sophomore at a HYPSM college, have a high GPA (est. 3.9 when recruiting), and generally have good extracurricular activities, though notably, I'm not a member of a consulting organization since it's difficult to get into one at my school. I have had 1 unpaid startup consulting internship in my freshman summer, and nothing solidified for sophomore summer. I'd like to ask you guys a few questions regarding MBB recruiting:

What are my chances for recruiting for MBB given my situation?

What sort of internships should I be looking for for sophomore summer? *Very* few consulting-focused internships seem to take sophomores at all. Is it bad if I don't get a "high profile" sophomore summer internship?

How/when should I start networking? No one at MBB offices seem to be accepting my LinkedIn invites. Is it bad if I don't network at all and just hope my resume is good enough?

Thank you:)

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are detailed answers to your questions regarding MBB recruiting:

Chances for Recruiting for MBB

  • High GPA: With an estimated GPA of 3.9 from a HYPSM college, you are in a strong position academically.
  • Extracurricular Activities: While not being in a consulting organization might be a minor setback, your overall profile with good extracurriculars and a high GPA still makes you a competitive candidate.
  • Previous Internship: Having an unpaid startup consulting internship from your freshman summer is a good start, showing relevant experience.

Internships for Sophomore Summer

  • Types of Internships: Look for internships that can build relevant skills and experiences. Options include:
    • F500 Internships: These are valuable, even if they are not specifically consulting-focused. Roles in strategy, finance, or operations can be beneficial.
    • Research Grants: Similar to the research grant related to M&A mentioned in the context, these can also be valuable.
    • Tier 2 Consulting Firms: Internships at firms like ATK, OW, ACN strat, EY-Parthenon, Deloitte S&O can be a good stepping stone.
  • High Profile Internships: It is not necessarily bad if you don't get a "high profile" internship. Focus on gaining relevant experience and skills.

Networking

  • Start Early: Networking should ideally start as early as possible. Spring of junior year is a common time to begin, but starting earlier can be beneficial.
  • Methods:
    • Email/LinkedIn: Reach out to alumni and professionals for 15-20 minute chats.
    • Consulting Clubs: If possible, join or participate in consulting clubs or related activities.
    • School Events: Attend school-sponsored social events, office hours, and case competitions.
  • Importance of Networking: Networking is crucial. Almost everyone who gets an MBB offer has had multiple positive interactions with consultants at the firms. If LinkedIn invites are not being accepted, try other methods like email or leveraging connections through your school.

Additional Tips

  • Case Prep: Start preparing for case interviews early. Practice with peers, join consulting clubs, and use resources available on WSO.
  • Resume: Ensure your resume highlights your achievements, impact, and relevant experiences.

By following these steps and leveraging your strong academic background, you can improve your chances of securing an MBB internship.

Impossible to say. From a UK perspective, being from a strong target like those listed would normally be enough to get you the online test. It then comes down to your performance and school doesn’t really matter.

My big advice for internships would actually be not to do consulting - unless it is either another MBB or a very specialised shop (if you want to present deep expertise in a certain field, which is a bit of a risk with the generalist model). In general, folks with strong academic research roles, gov/multilateral, good banks etc are going to be more distinctive when hiring than someone who has a B4/T2 internship - and likely more interesting to work with too. So I’d suggest, within reason, find the most interesting/impressive internship you can and pick something you’ll be good at; far better than settling for a second rate consulting job, in my view.

Not sure if my case is an outlier, but I study at a UK target (Oxbridge) and got insta dinged from all three for summer internships despite having a brandname tech internship and a couple spring weeks - is FT different to SA?
