Is APD not able to get a summer intern from MBB?
Hello, I am a PhD student looking for summer intern in MBB. Got rejected from both McKinsey and BCG, not heard back from Bain yet. BCG suggested me to apply for full time position. It seems they look explicitly for MBAs for those APD summer positions. But I am not sure. Could anyone give me some insight? Thank you!
I've seen a couple PhD summer associates. While in general it's pretty rare, I'm not sure if that's because PhDs don't typically apply or that they just aren't accepted at the same rate as MBAs
Yes, I know it is rare, there are a few PhDs looking for consulting interns in my mind.
In general, I think the PhDs are generally hired on on a slightly different development path. For example, the PhD hires for full-time go through a more robust mini-MBA type training session when they start (vs. the 1 week rampup for MBA and undergrad hires), are paired with advanced degree mentors, and are generally viewed as an investment longer early on in their career.
Given this slow ramp assumption on development (which may not always be applicable), they tend to focus on full-time vs. summer internships for PhD hires. Since the summer internship is only ~9-10 weeks, they do not think they would get the right read in that short of a time period and would rather fill that slot with MBAs.
Thank you pfitzy. I really appreciate your insider view. Then I'd be more focused on a full time application.
I'm a Phd that went thru summer and FT recruiting this past year. For the reason stated above, a high majority of summer interns are MBAs, but APD/ADC recruiting is much more open for FT. Don't let a summer rejection deter you.
