Job in Europe w/ misdemeanors in the US?
Hello experienced friends,
I've looked through the existing threads on this forum, and could not find an answer to an albeit quite specific question. Hope you guys can help.
I'll most likely be offered the the chance to join a big name firm (think the likes of McK, A.T.K, etc) in Europe (not US).
I previously have lived in the US for a few years. And... I have a couple misdemeanors on my US-record. (I'm not going to use the "a friend of mine" technique, I'll rather be upfront.) The misdemeanors are for "disorderly conduct". It's not DUI, or theft, or drugs. At the time, the district attorney had played hardball, threatening with jail time and other punishments, and I caved under pressure and pleaded "no contest" to get a fine and community service.
Evidently, as misdemeanors, these would show up on a thoroughly-conducted background check in the US.
My questions though are:
-- in the case of someone who joins a European office (of a high-profile company like McK), do they conduct background checks in the US? (Especially since I lived in the US for several years.) What's the policy in Europe? Do they just do employment checks and school checks, or would they do criminal background checks in the US, although the hiring office is European?
-- in case this comes up: would they ding me?
Thank you so much for your help, guys.
P.S. In case you're wondering: I can only apply for expungement after my (informal) probation period is over...
Oh no one of these again...
I know it may not be the "right" question, but could you guys share what you know/ heard of? I'm sorry for my mistake, I regret it immensely, it does not represent me at all, but I have to live with it, and cannot help but wonder how much this will affect me. That's why I'm asking for help...
likely depends on whether the company is American or not. in general i cant imagine that their background check goes as far as checking every country that you ever lived in.
haha sorry i thought you were a troll
No problemo :-) And I wish I were a troll; unfortunately the problem is real.
Any experience (either first-hand or "hearsay")? Do the European braches (of an American company) ask "have you ever been convicted of a misdemeanor?" and do they perform background checks in the US (seeing that the person has lived there for several years)?
Thanks!
