London internship advice

Hi all,

I will start my postgraduate studies at LSE (non-flagship, political science-related course) this fall. I do not aspire to work in London but if I am already there why not pick up some more experience before I start working full-time in my home country (Germany). Hence, I am looking for inspiration, advice and ideas what I may be able to secure given my profile:

  • B.A. Political Science at a very good German university (upper second class)
  • 3 mo. internship at a county/district administration
  • 4 mo. working student at no-name political affairs/public sector/campaign consultancy
  • 3 mo. internship Big 4 public sector consulting
  • 3 mo. internship in sales/marketing at subsidiary of a large software company (public sector-related)

My end goal is consulting but I think you have to start as a generalist in T1+2 and chances to secure such a position as a politics student are very slim (in Germany). So, I would like my internship to be either in ‚regular‘ (strategy or management) consulting or somewhere that sets me up well for a public sector/politics-focused career from where I can lateral to a T1/2’s public sector practice later on. For the latter, I am mainly thinking about renowned political institutions or public policy/affairs internships at a large corporation.

I would be thankful for general recommendations on where and when to apply, insights on whether there are important things to keep in mind and basically any suggestions on where to look or find resources on the topic.

Thank you guys in advance!
